Warnings Readers Will Find on Kynx_Fic & Why

Jul 27, 2009 15:45

The following metaesque rant is the subjective opinionated opinion of Kit84 and Jynnxx, we have next to no interest in telling other people what to do or how to do it, this is how we do it and why. Questions, alternate opinions and discussion is welcome.

Cut for length )

Too headachey and I can't find pretty words (tried though!) so I'll just say I agree and quote some of your pretty words cause yes *nods* I agree:) (broken record? me? nuh uh)

Respect goes both ways, if you warn your readers appropriately, you can expect them to respect your choice of subjects. Another thing about us creative types (if that makes me big headed to categorize me/us as creative, well hmm whatever) we can't always control what we write about, we don't always have a say in exorcising our imagination and sometimes, it is not very nice. Writing is a coping strategy for me and if I didn't have some difficult things to cope with, I don't think I'd be even half as expressive.

I love you, all of your commenters (jesus f. christ (yes F, fuck the H)) are clearly way more awesome than half the people online (aka the people in the linked posts above, my god).

We've had the discussion about warnings once, I think? Yes. So this time I will stay quiet, at least for the time being.

Anyway, TENTACLE!PORN. I laughed so hard when I read that. SO HARD, HOLY CHRIST. Mostly because I think I linked you to it once, oh god. *giggles manaically* MCR fandom is odd, but often so much better than this one, I've found, if only for the random-ass variety you find. Which reminds me, I need to send you a ranty message about that. WHY IS THIS FANDOM SO BORING SOMETIMES.

This is an annoying comment. It's annoying me, but I'm too half-assed to actually go back and fix it. Enjoy, after all the thought-provoking and well-thought-out posts from your other readers.

*skips merrily*

Love your meta posts.

Do you think the slash community is overdue for a reminder on warnings and what specifically to warn about?

Love yours too *g*
Kinda, wish we didn't have to. Like I said ^^ Up there, warning for angst is all very well, but it doesn't mean the same thing to different people, so warning for actual events in the fic is important too, IE warning for, abuse, rape, violence and character death. Or, accidental character death, might be the difference between you enjoyning/readign the fic or not, same initial warning but, angst/character death doesn't really cover it for either of them.

I just don't know what the answer is, nothing is gonna be perfect, but more people are thinking about it, so that's good.

I'm very happy with this meta-post too. I'm struggling to find the time, but I'll be reading all the comments here and whatever you further link to.

It's obvious that it's time for us to talk about the warnings!issue on the comm. Comm mods have a part of responsibility in that they should help authors to make the most efficient headers possible. But the problem is so complex that it's a little despairing to say the least (*g*). Insufficient headers can be the result of a writer's inexperience. Might also mean that a writer is in a totally different mindset than their readers. Which could be something for them to think about in a zen way, better than to start ruffling their feathers.

(is still jynx)

I think inexperience is one factor, but the different mind set is also part of it. We write something and then have to actively step out of our own shoes and look at it from a readers POV and ask ourselves what we need to warn for, a lot of times I don't read warnings, but everyone is not me, so I try to think like someone who is not me to decide. Plus, there's always 2 of us writing headers and if one of us misses something the other sees it, so there's that too.

I really don't see an absolute solution, because however much we try to focus on the majority, we're always going to miss someone.

Zen is better than feather upsetting, yeps :D

Okay, here, for what it's worth, is my contribution of two cents.

I believe that warnings are necessary. Especially, like you said, if something happens in a story that comes way out of left field and some readers might not be happy about it, like mpreg or het or what have you.

But THAT being said, I also am in agreement that you cannot possibly hope to warn readers about EVERYTHING or you might as well write the entire summary of the plot, in lurid detail, on the warning part of the header. And anyone who clicks on a fic labeled "dark" or "fluffy" or "angsty" or whatever...well, they did so at their own risk. If it offends their sensitivities, tough. Sorry, shit happens, folks. You knew when you clicked the cut that what you were about to read was considered by the subjective souls who wrote it to be dark/fluffy/angsty/disturbing/what have you. So my sympathy well runs a little dry.

But I think your post made some very good points. And okay, so that might have been my $5.78 worth instead.

Agreed, absolutely no way we can warn for everything, like movies in a way, but not, fic needs to warn with the majority in mind and not the individual, imo.

And if the warnings are there, my sympathy is also being thing for complaints after the fact *nods*

*loves too* :D
