Honestly? Probably not even til the next class. I wouldn't call it intellectual masturbation exactly, but commenting in class is definitely mostly for your own benefit. People do it to hear themselves talk. I did find that when I participated, there were two positive side effects that occurred fairly frequently

My opinion: Fuck what you think about what other people think about you in class. You get out of school what you put into it. It´s not about proving yourself to anybody else. It´s about learning what interests you. Your input creates conversation and that conversation is shared by the whole class. Being silent is not active participation. Maybe I say this because I am a kinesthetic learner, but active participation is one of the most central aspects to learning.
