The first thing he notices is how his back aches and feels heavier than normal, and it's not long before he notices the wings. Having wings isn't foreign to him in any way, but generally he's used to sprouting them in a time of great need and possibly passing out

As my world's strongest Esper, I manipulate vectors. To put that in perspective for you--anything that has magnitude and direction, I can manipulate. I could theoretically survive a nuclear war, tilt the earth's axis, or even stop the world from spinning, among about a thousand other things.

You'll find that your power is diminished here, but maybe it's still enough to take down the barrier imprisoning us. Even so, I'd advise against it.

It's an effect of being within the barrier. If you want a more technical explanation, I'm afraid you'll have to ask someone else!

But aside from that, the barrier also protects us from the environment outside. In this world, there are natural Shifts occurring that are negated within this barrier -- and then there's the Third Party, which is in short a group of zealots that wants to permanently kill and sacrifice all of us.
