[ Other Characters ] : n/a

[ Character's Name ] : Alex
[ Character's Age ] : Unknown, appears about 18-20 to me
[ Series ] : Golden Sun
[ Canon Point ] : At the end of The Lost Age when he's been pulled underground with Mt. Aleph

[ History ] :
Link; believe it or not I probably would have written more than this.

[ Personality ] :
Alex is one of if not the most mysterious character in the series. He is very cordial around other people, remaining calm and generally polite. He's honest with people almost to a fault and has been known to casually insult people to their faces. If someone asks him a question he doesn't wish to answer, he dances around it and/or changes the subject. Despite traveling with several groups during the series, Alex comes off as being quite a loner. He doesn't let himself get close to anyone or become emotionally attached (or tries not to, at least). People who get to know him generally see him as being incredibly egotistical and they would be correct.

His behavior can be explained by what's lying under the surface, however. Alex is completely power-hungry and will devise plans with the sole intent of helping himself. Should his goals align with those of another group, he'll go along with them. This plays to his benefit because it provides him with people to unknowingly do his dirty work and if they ever realize this it's too late.

This is actually part of one of his biggest strengths, negative as it may be. Alex is highly skilled at manipulating people and most of the traits I've listed are what he uses to pull it off. His attitude is very enigmatic; you can tell he's up to something but you can never quite figure out what it is until it's directly stated. Suspicious as he is, he's usually able to keep himself looking just trustworthy enough for people to give him the benefit of the doubt. No one can ever figure out his true motives which plays well into his plans in the long run and his laid-back and almost friendly behavior along with his honesty on matters give people fewer reasons not to trust him. Getting other people to do his work keeps him on that border-line as well, since generally it can't be proven that he's to blame. This skill was highlighted recently in Golden Sun: Dark Dawn where even after the Golden Sun event Kraden wonders if Alex is their enemy or if he's just helping in his own way.

One of the answers to these questions is certain: Alex is helping Alex. If he can find people to unknowingly do the work for him, the better. Most of the time from the standpoint of the others it seems like he's not helping anything, but this is merely part of the facade he uses to keep control behind-the-scenes. He even tells Felix that he is able to "discard people once they are no longer of use to" him.

As mentioned before, what Alex really desires is power. The closest he comes to admitting this to the others is after the beacon of Mercury Lighthouse is lit since he is a Water Adept and therefore his power was amplified at that moment. Alex wanted all the lighthouses to be lit so he could take the power of the Golden Sun and become invincible. Once he believed he had this power, he immediately tried to conjure storms to destroy the surrounding area just to test them out. He learned, much to his horror, that he was not actually all-powerful when the Wise One threw him to the ground a few times, leaving him immobile when Mt. Aleph collapsed under him. He survived and escaped, however, and while his motives 30 years later are still unknown it most likely again pertains to the fact that he wants more power.

Despite all of these screwed up and self-centered traits, Alex is actually capable of caring about other people. This is a fact he is not willing to admit or possibly even acknowledge to himself. After Mia fell into Karst's trap, in the only case you can ever read his mind he is actually worried about her and feels the urge to go and help. Normally this would be expected seeing as they're cousins and apparently the only ones left in their clan, but for Alex this is very inconsistent with his image. He thinks of the feeling as "weak", though, and tries to totally put these thoughts aside, rare as they are.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Alex is a very powerful Adept. I can't say much more than that on the matter because we've never seen him in an actual fight. Being a Water Adept, I would assume he can use most if not all of the Psynergy of that element. He was once shown making water shoot out of the ground, something no other Adept has done. Otherwise his Psynergy would probably include attacks based on water and ice as well as healing powers.

He also has other Psynergy that he mysteriously obtained after leaving Imil that seems very rare. One of these is the ability to hover and move while doing so without the marking usually necessary for the normal Hover Psynergy. The other is the ability to warp, which he seems to be able to do over short distances. He'll vanish from one spot, be invisible for a time, and could reappear anywhere nearby. He's capable of doing this while holding onto other people, as well.

While not being perfect, the Golden Sun did imbue him with a great amount of power but other than the ability to survive Mt. Aleph's collapse and aging very little over thirty years, it's not certain what exactly it made him capable of.

Outside of his powers, Alex is very intelligent. He appears to have a vast array of knowledge about his own world but his sources remain unknown. He's excellent at making long-term plans and executing rather complicated schemes. This is helped by the fact that he's a master at manipulating people.

On the surface he doesn't seem to have many weaknesses, as he is egotistical and power-hungry enough to have hardened himself from almost everything. He's normally very thorough when plotting something, though as he approaches whatever he wants it seems like his vision begins to narrow and in his excitement he can miss something or let something slip. Also, he considers any time he feels compassion or concern or anything else along the lines of caring for another person to be a weakness so he doesn't try to form any emotional attachments with anyone. And despite the fact that he can generally get the benefit of the doubt from most people, he can still end up on people's bad sides very easily.

[ Other Important Facts ] :
As mentioned, Alex is border-line immortal and extremely powerful in his world which I realize will have to be toned down. Given his usual goals and methods, though, he won't really be a threat when it comes to harming people or destroying things.

[ Sample ] :
Alex frowned immediately after he awoke. Something was definitely off here. Had Mt. Aleph been pulled down to the bottom of the ocean? If that were the case, though, why was he not engulfed by water? He certainly felt wet but it was fairly obvious that somehow he was within a cushion of air. Not that any of it would make a lot of difference to him in the long run. It was actually almost comforting to see his own element instead of earth all around him. And now that he'd gotten the power from the Golden Sun...

...Here was another oddity he'd already noticed, actually. That accursed Wise One had been bad enough, but now he felt as though there was much less power within him. How was that possible? He'd obviously survived the catastrophe; he should still have everything he was granted.

He sat up but paused as he noticed the rest of his surroundings, looking mildly surprised. There was an entire city here? This architecture wasn't like anything he'd ever seen or heard of in Weyard. Where was this exactly? He finally stood, but once again found a surprise as a small orb of light floated a few inches in front of him directly at eye level. Strange... This wasn't Psynergy of any sort, he could tell that much. Yet there it was, just floating there. After a few moments it rose to hover above his head.

All of this was extremely peculiar and Alex didn't like it. Something outside of the workings of Alchemy was definitely at play here which already made him feel like he was at a severe disadvantage. If he was going to return to the surface it would be best to gather information as subtly as possible at first and then proceed with what he found there, he thought. After all, regardless of what had happened he needed to focus on getting all of his power back. He was not going to be cheated out of what was rightfully his.

----

I will say this device is rather interesting. No doubt many people would find this useful.

I'm afraid I have arrived in this city unintentionally, though from the sound of things I am not the only one in this situation. As charming as it is, I really cannot linger here. I would appreciate being given an explanation for all of this; it's a bit of an inconvenience, you know.

[ Questions? Comments? Concerns? ] :
Since it's been mentioned, what would happen with his powers? Or at least what should I suspect? There's not much information on them as it is so would he just happen to maintain weaker versions of the ones I already know about?
