Can someone confirm this?

Jun 25, 2007 10:44

I'd like to know if this letter is true. I knew that the teacher's were planning to strike. While I have already graduated, I think this is an important letter for anyone at WCU to read, especially if the teachers are going to go through with this. I apologize to the community if this is not the place for this post.

Dear Fellow Students,

There has not been enough information circulated about the strike that faculty members are preparing for effective 06/30/2007. The contract for our educators is expiring on June 30 and the faculty is preparing for a strike. The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) has offered our professors at the 14 state universities across Pennsylvania a contract with a 0% increase in pay for 4 years and an increase in health care premiums. This represents a pay cut of approximately 10% over the life of the contract, due to inflation. It comes on the heels of the last contract, in which faculty also suffered 2 years of 0 % pay increases. Why? Because since 1983 the funding contributed by the state to subsidize our educations has fallen from 62.95% to only 37.84%. PASSHE is trying to cut teachers' pay to balance their budget.

This is not a fair contract offer. If the state does not come up with an acceptable offer by June 30, 2007, when the current contract expires, professors will strike. The state is forcing our professors to make a difficult choice - either they continue to take pay cuts, and keep teaching us, or they take a stand. What this means for us the students is that if a strike ensues there will be NO FALL CLASSES. Individual instructors may hold classes but 97% have voted to strike.

This means if you're graduating this year, chances are, you won't. If you're planning on graduating in 4 years, chances are, you can't. And if the strike is settled during the semester, we'll be forced to attend classes over break to finish the semester.

Make the state offer our teachers a fair contract! We have to make our voices heard!

Please do the following to help:

1- Copy and paste this letter into an email and forward to anyone you know with a stake in this struggle - any clubs or organizations you have access to, post information on Facebook, Myspace, or email friends at other state universities, tell your parents or alumni that you may be in contact with. Tell anyone who can help- which is everyone.
2- Read the letter below. Make any changes you wish - name, school, anything you want to add. If you don't like this letter, write you own!
3- Copy your letter.
4- Paste the text into emails addressed individually to the representatives listed below.
5- Send emails (try not to use your school emails)
6- Also proven to be much more effective is an actual letter. I know this take more time but it will be much appreciated. These people get massive amounts of email,
and this campaign could get lost in the clutter.

See links and research if you want
more info. Also get your parents involved too this affects everyone.

Please take the time to get involved in this. Most of the work is done for you. Just copy, paste, and send.
