Being a social worker is hard and honest work... you can't expect to connect with everyone... but the fact that you try and make the effort says a lot.. the rest is up to them... they have to come see you, you know? Plus some of these kids have been in MESSED UP situations... a helping hand and a comforting smile is good to help them begin to heal and start over.

I love writing as well and totally understand how you feel when you look back at old material. As a rule, I try not to look back on the past and concentrate on the now.
