I'm all for free speech and Glenn Beck is certainly exercising his right. I doubt Beck incited Byron Williams' shooting spree, just like I doubt Joseph McCarthy incited the Red Scare. What I believe is that Beck and McCarthy fueled their according fires and watched the world burn gleefully ( Read more... )

I am reminded of Timothy McVeigh as well. Take away his rather overt racism, and a lot of his talking points would have found a comfortable home on Glenn Beck's radio show. McVeigh was obsessed with the government reaction to Ruby Ridge and Waco, and believed that the government was moving towards a facist state. He was selling T-Shirts with the oft abused Jefferson quote about the "tree of liberty" being "refreshed by the blood of patriots," which is something I've seen on people at tea party rallies.

What bums me most is that Beck will face zero consequences. He ought to be arrested and charged with incitement to violence, but he won't even be fired. He'll brazenly play the martyr. I am so goddamned sick of this.

If Beck is arrested, then we live in the kind of country I don't want to live in anymore. You can get the exact same pablum he peddles for free on the internet. I hope we don't start censoring that, too, despite the fact that I personally disagree with it.

As much as I would prefer to see Beck go back to this, you're right. But he sure does love to walk that fine line:In January, Beck announced he was going to be a "progressive hunter ( ... )

What about that whole shouting "FIRE!" in a crowded theatre thing?

I do like that Williams blames/attributes his violence to Beck and his show, and says that, though Beck will deny inciting violence, Beck's words are literally what has incited Williams and will do the same for "hundreds of thousands" more.

I don't necessarily want him fired or arrested or anything, but I do want every individual in the country to start looking at him like the lunatic he is.

Maybe he'll drink himself to death afterwards?
