Question: Is it too much to ask that we test for schizophrenia and psychosis before allowing someone to buy a gun?

Maybe. That's a pretty intrusive test, and requiring it also requires several other components (e.g. licensing of gun owners) that are very difficult to pass with a Republican-controlled house (not to mention the history of how those laws are abused).

Test for schizophrenia/psychosis can get pretty weird...the DSM is a mess and the tests can be pretty fuzzy (my brother is now being given an antipsychotic despite no psychosis diagnosis).

I love Tom Tomorrow. Thanks for posting this.

Unfortunately, he's right, the gun-toters won, despite the fact that every study has shown that countries with strict gun control laws have far fewer gun deaths than those countries without them.

its a tough sell to freedom loving Americans

esp NRA flavoured ones.

if you want this to happen, you need to see what you can do about creating a voluntary licencing scheme. create a body which can licence people to own guns. With the modern internet, this would be possible.

All very well to talk about it isn't it...

maybe if enough people get fed up with the practically-expected-at-this-point occasional bloodbaths, things might start to change.

until then, it will keep on keeping on which is sad, but there is a high price to pay when nobody wants to be held accountable for their attitudes anymore.
