The implication is that we have fewer horses and bayonets now (although this is not correct according to you regarding bayonets) than we did in 1916, because they are obsolete, therefore this is not a matter of great concern. Even IF this were entirely correct, it doesn't mean that ships are obsolete.
So, he made an off the cuff comment that tells us a lot about him--he's not paying attention to the military either operationally or socially, hasn't paid attention to some of the more interesting aspects of the clandestine war.
And this man has the responsibility and authority to send my wife and friends (And hypothetically recall me, as I'm Retired Reserve) off to fight a war he's not really paying attention to. That's how I feel when people make statements about the desirability or necessity of drastically increasing the population of our country when by their statements they ( ... )
