Who Really Needs An AR15?

This question has been bandied about by people who don't know guns, as some sort of rhetorical trump.  The answer is somewhat complicated for people not versed in the subject, but I'm going to have a whack at it.

I do believe that gun ownership is important. Unfortunately, it isn't criminals as such that the anti-gun movement gains strength from. The mentally insane, the suicidal, and jealous assholes who decide that if their significant other wants to leave they should kill them (and sometimes other members of the family as well) are all things that make bad press for guns and they do make anti guns arguments resonate to me. There are also the occasions where children get ahold of guns and hurt themselves or others - though that is an education and safety issue more than a guns are bad issue to me.

I can avoid bad neighborhoods. It is somewhat harder to avoid the other dangers.

Unfortunately, the US does not have a good system in place for the mentally ill - too often they are not given the treatment they need or are left to their or their families care when it would be far better to institutionalize them. The money to take care of them is not available.

But any kind of background check only works when there's an existing problem that meets standards for denial--which pretty much requires incarceration or institutionalization.

As for more institutionalization, sure, except as long as the person is even barely competent, they have the right to refuse.

Sometimes there's no answer.
