Somerville MA in the NYTimes

For my own amusement, while I'm on a conference call, I'm compiling all the mentions of Somerville MA in the New York Times.

The first time I went to see friends in Somerville, back in 2001 when I'd moved back to Boston, my parents looked at me, aghast, and said, "You're going to Slummerville?" I do wonder how many of the homes that my friends live in now were once tenanted by people in the Winter Hill Gang.

They were behind the times but not by much. Cambridge rent control ended in 1994, and Somerville transformed rapidly ~1996-2000 in large part in response to that - waves of people moving out of Cambridge into suddenly much more affordable Somerville, except that rents in the parts of Somerville near Cambridge started shooting up too, people moved to east Somerville, and west Somerville became very Cambridge-like at the same time. (My rent, living in Somerville near the Cambridge line, increased more rapidly after 2000 than it had in the late 90s, but I think things stabilized by ~2004).
