Today's pretty cool. I got my first AND second interview invitations (for paid internships I found on my own). So take note that being a junior might open up a lot of opportunities btw. The first interview's tomorrow morning eek. It doesn't scare me that much. What scares me is that I have no idea where I'm headed... I've been leaning toward ( Read more... )

Yeah the sense i got from last year is that a wholottashit is open to you once you hit junior year, basically every place with internships wants juniors and ever place hiring full time obviously wants seniors, so trying for shit before that is a little just like hm you're extraneous lets find a place to put you. In other news, really really early interviews/hiring/applications are bullshit. And I really like the idea of grad school or at least 5th year masters as a way of delaying real life ( ... )

So...philosophically, yeah this nation (world?) has become one of workaholics. I don't know why. I've read it mentioned that people didn't use to work like this, in the 50s or whenever. But the hrs/week keeps creeping up. People want to stay competitive, there are more layoffs and more firings and less openings and more unemployment even among skilled folks, so there's more competition. So as much as you'd think it should be OK to pay me 4/5 as much to only work 40 hours instead of 50 per week, it's not an option, because in today's market that demonstrates a lack of enthusiasm, a lack of drive and devotion, and we can't have that in this modern cutthroat business scene. So as the hours crept upward over the decades and the go-getters said yes! more work, more money! those who would've been just fine with the standard 9 to 5 got dragged along because of the threat of no work at all.
