I just decided what I'm going to be for holloween.

I'm going to get a bunch of paper, cut it into round triangle things, and paint it a little gray. Then i'm going to tape them all over my body, and be a hurricane!

You could just be a mathematician.

... I find that it usually frightens people I meet at parties.

I've gotten that too. And do they follow it with, "So where are you teaching?" As if that's the only thing mathematicians do.

Usually the first sentence is "I hated math at school"... followed by the where-do-you-teach thing.

Though I have to admit that what they say makes sense (not the math being scary bit... well actually probably that bit too). What I mean is that most people are either teaching or studying work done by others. Relatively few people actually create and publish new stuff.

Yah I get the whole "I hate math" thing as well. So my reply is usually "all the more reason to challenge yourself".

You're right though, about the small number of mathematicians doing something other than teaching. Which may be the reason why most people assume that we study math so we can teach it. :P

Round triangle things... like cones?
I say paint it first, then cut. ;)

No, still two dimensional. Like the shape of a eucalytus leaf. I think it will be more likely to flutter when I spin around like that.

Why not just get gray paper and save yourself the painting?

Cause it's still gonna be mostly white, like it looks in satellite pictures. It's gonna have gray and blue whispy stripe things. The painting won't take a long time. It's the stapling and taping it to myself in such a way that it flutters that worries me.
