First and foremost: It's horrible that something like that could actually happen.

The second damned shame is: That circumstances prevented you from being able to write this piece in time for the deadline.

And the third shame is: That you're now out of the official game. In a better world, someone who writes as well as you do should be able to stay in the game until the bitter end.
