BRITISH EMPIRE: All right, fine, your stupid embargo worked. We won’t levy any more taxes-

AMERICAN COLONIES: Huzzah! Time to get drunk!

BRITISH EMPIRE: Except on tea.

AMERICAN COLONIES: What?

BRITISH EMPIRE: Get over it, it’s just tea. Seriously, where do you get this ( Read more... )

I'm coming from a more social country, so all of that is basic stuff for me. Of course the country needs taxes, otherwise you don't get services, and people should aspire for as many services as possible, right?

So for me it's like this: people in the US don't get that if they pay for those services, they won't have to pay for that privately! Or something. Then I remind myself that's a naive approach to the matter and that I'm not there, so what do I even know. XP

Seascribe pretty much has it nailed down. The USA pretty much has its hands tied when it comes to anything to do with taxes because of the reasons why the revolutionary war started. It's stuck in peoples' heads that TAXES ARE BAD, even though higher taxes can often lead to more services. Any time someone from the States comments that they wish they had health care the way Canada does, I say "Are you willing to pay the 13% sales tax for that? Higher taxes overall? That's what we pay to get that privilege."

All that being said, that bit up above was hilarious!

OH MY GOD. *rolling on the floor*

And I'm with seascribe too. the whole healthcare debate is infuriating. I haven't had health insurance in almost four years. As a result, I haven't had any check-ups in that long. As someone who previously had a health problem that REQUIRES periodical check-ups, I'm basically just crossing my fingers every time I get a nose bleed and praying that it's not the big bad monster. I would gladly pay additional taxes to see a fucking doctor.

But here in Amurca, the general consensus of the privileged and powerful is that if you can't afford private insurance, you clearly did something wrong in your life (like major in English) and should just go die.

*snerk* Oh, the taxes. On TEA. My high school class was so outraged.
