A/N: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEAR hailynx !  happy birthday to you~  #TeamSurviveAllTheThings <3

"Are you ready to head home?" Jongdae blows a slow breath through his lips, admiring the curl of white in the air between them. He quit cigarettes more than a year ago, and sometimes he still misses releasing the thin stream of smoke from his lips. Good thing he lives in the mountains, where eight months out of twelve he can get the same sort of satisfaction just from exhaling in the frigid air.

His breaths hang there in the cold for a few seconds as they dissipate and he remembers the clouds over the sea in summer. Jongdae hasn't seen the sea in years, though.

"Yeah, just one more--" Yixing's voice slips out in distracted syllables to the rhythm of his palette knife spackling the canvas with flecks of red and smears of umber.

"It's going to rain if you don't hurry up," Jongdae singsongs as he winds his scarf tighter around his neck and then winds his arms around the base of Yixing's waist. "And then you'll get soggy and so will your canvas and you'll be sorry."

"Hm." Yixing's exhale is warm on the slivers of bare skin where the cuffs of Jongdae's gloves don't quite reach the ends of his sleeves. Neither of them are very good at the laundry, and at least one of their shirts or jerseys winds up smaller than it used to be with every load. "It's not going to rain, Dae. But even if it did, that might result in a rather unique finish to my canvas, don't you think?"

"You could title it Melted Rainbow, that sounds like a great way to 'finish' it, hyung." Jongdae shakes his head against the curve of Yixing's back and presses his cheek into his shoulder. He can feel Yixing's heartbeat echo in his palms as he slides his hands up from his waist. "Come on, let's go home. It's cold and I'm hungry and we still haven't had a chance to taste test that new mint cocoa mix you ordered for us."

"Mm, I see where your priorities lie," Yixing hums, voice sliding into a mournful sigh. "Alright, alright. I guess I can pack up and call it a day. The light's starting to go all weird from the shifts in the cloudscape, anyway." He dabs the paint from his knife onto a clean spot of the mixing tray in his paint box. His gentle fingers bundle the brushes in a padded flannel for safekeeping until he can rinse them properly at home.

"You know what my priorities are." Jongdae thumps his gloved knuckles against the padded vest buttoned over Yixing’s sweater. "I don't want you catching cold again and sniffling for the next two weeks without--"

"Ok, ok! I stand corrected, now enough of that--" Yixing bats his hands away, pausing to tuck a stray lock of hair back up into the rolled brim of Jongdae's beanie. His fingertips are chill against Jongdae's forehead, skin red and dull from exposure.

It's not really winter, not yet. The weather is just getting into Jack Frost mode, but still. Yixing shouldn't be wearing fingerless gloves out here, and he really should put on a proper coat if they're going to be out for hours at a time. Jongdae is all too practiced at giving in to Yixing's coaxing smile, though. That's why he can't take his boyfriend grocery shopping with him, or else they wind up with half a cart of salad fixings to make green smoothies and half a cart of fair trade dark chocolate and pizza Pringles, and nothing to cook a real, full course meal out of.

"Enough of what?" Jongdae whispers as he catches Yixing's fingers in his gloved ones. He presses a kiss to the tip of each one and Yixing's smile melts into fondness at the familiar gesture.

"--Enough of your nagging," Yixing singsongs back at him. He tweaks the tip of Jongdae's nose. "Come on, let's go inside."

Yixing shoulders the carrying strap of his easel and balances the paint box and trays across his forearms. The only piece he will let Jongdae help with is the roll of paintbrushes which weighs nothing compared to the load he's got, even with the heft of the palette knife and its bone handle bundled inside. Jongdae doesn't scold him for it though, just follows Yixing up the hill and tries to keep pace with his strides.

"What do you want to eat for dinner?"

"Mm, no need to make a fuss out dinner. We can just order pizza, if you're tired and don't feel like cooking?" Yixing keeps his expression neutral as Jongdae ushers him into the garage with a palm pressed to the small of his back, but Jongdae picks up on the faint note of hopefulness in his voice.

"Pizza, hmm..."

“Think about it--no dishes to wash, we won’t even have to get up to check the oven.” Yixing toes out of his shoes next to the doorstep and tugs Jongdae into his side by the ends of his muffler.

“We’d still have to get up to answer the door when the delivery arrives,” Jongdae points out with a side glance. “Are you sure that’s all you want? Nothing more exciting than pizza?”

“Hm, well I suppose we could order extra toppings?” He says it like he’s making an innocent suggestion, but Yixing’s dimpled grin gives him away. “I mean we could go out, but wouldn’t it be nicer just to stay in and enjoy the evening together? You’re more special to me than any fancy restaurant, Jongdae.”

Jongdae growls when Yixing fluffs the fringe on his scarf, tickling it against the underside of his chin. He doesn’t reach up to push him away though, fingers occupied with the knotted laces of his left sneaker. “Whatever you want! It’s your day, after all.”

Jongdae shrugs as he straightens up. Yixing already has the house key in the door knob. He pushes it open, holding the door for his boyfriend with a chivalrous wave, but Jongdae gives him a push through the entrance.

“Ladies first,” he whispers as Yixing stumbles into the entryway, “Oops! I mean, birthday boys first!”

Yixing sticks his foot back to trip him, but Jongdae is the one who steadies Yixing when the lights flash on and several of their friends burst out from behind the stairwell to greet them,

“Surprise! Happy birthday to you~!” they start to sing, Kyungsoo leading the procession with a cake balanced carefully in his hands.

“What the--!”

The loud chorus drowns out Yixing’s laughter, but Jongdae can feel the familiar sounds of it reverberate in his chest as he wraps him up in a koala hug, hanging on with his knees to Yixing’s legs. He hopes Yixing can hear his singing the loudest too, so he buries his face in his boyfriend’s chest as they finish the birthday song.

“Make a wish!” Baekhyun demands as he shoves the cake up to Yixing’s face so he can extinguish the smoking candles.

Yixing sucks in a deep breath, choking a bit on the threads of smoking streaming up from the thin flames, and blows them all out except for one. That’s still quite an impressive feat, considering Baekhyun insisted on sticking more than twenty candles on the cake and obviously Jongdae vetoed Kyungsoo’s pedantic concerns. So Jongdae helps Yixing out with the last candle, then plucks it out to smear a stripe of pink frosting across his cheek.

“Happy birthday, hyung!” he whispers against Yixing’s neck.

"I thought you were in a hurry to get me inside because you actually cared about my health! Brat." His punch lands on the soft part of Jongdae's shoulder and Jongdae doesn't try to flinch away. He lets his feet drop to the floor and smiles up at Yixing with a slant of his brows because he kind of deserved that, and also because Yixing doesn't punch that hard.

“Let’s go eat!” Jongin clamps his hands over Baekhyun’s shoulders to steer him and the cake back to the kitchen where the forks are, and Jongdae pushes Yixing ahead of him down the hall.

“Thank you.” Yixing glances over his shoulder, still laughing, and Jongdae leans up to steal a quick kiss from his lips.

“Minseok hyung already offered to wash the dishes, so we can order whatever you want. Joonmyun hyung insisted we wait to ask you what you wanted.”

“Definitely pizza!” Yixing catches him around the waist for a squeeze as Jongdae digs out his phone.

“I’m already dialing! And you’re right, an evening at home with our special people is an excellent way to celebrate.”
