Do people still use these things...? D: Something I wrote in-between delirium and sleepiness as I was utterly inspired by
kh_drabble's latest challenge Rise Up. May or may not produce a companion piece later today. (Can I say how good it feels to finally be able to write again? For years, I've struggled to get something down but never actually finished them. Here's to a new leaf!)
Spoilers for Birth by Sleep and Drop Dream Distance.
sen·tience n. 1. the state or quality of being sentient; awareness. 2. sense perception not involving intelligence or mental perception; feeling.
In the beginning, they did not conceive that choice was an option. Events existed on a predestined pathway of great harmony and repugnant chaos. For several millennia, peace ruled their worlds as one cohesive whole. Each planet remained ignorant of each other’s existence save a few adventurous souls. Near the end, it was the darkness of greed, power, and envy that shattered this fragile preservation of light, love, and kindness.
One by one, they heeded their masters’ calls for aid amidst the peril of the Keyblade War. They clashed and clanged against their darker counterparts in their fight to defend Kingdom Hearts. They are the silent soldiers who are unable to cry out or sob when their brethren fall, especially for the ones who didn’t ask to have a dark master.
And then the χ-blade cracks into twenty different pieces. Seven are light. Thirteen are dark.
It is, to their knowledge, the greatest price ever paid to avoid a fate worse than eternal darkness.
Generations of Keyblade Masters have perished during the war. This imbalance of Keyblades and wielders stagnates the traditional Keyblade Inheritance Ceremony wherein, on this side of camaraderie, they are reincarnated or continue their lives within the grasp of a new master. Although the Keyblade Masters do not recognize young wielders as masters until after a successful trial, they wholeheartedly acknowledge whom they belong to.
Kingdom Key continuously battles with itself during its time as Sora’s protector against the heartless. It knows its rightful place is within the hands of Riku, as decreed by Terra all those years previous. However, the longer Kingdom Key fights alongside Sora, the more it immerses itself in his everlasting faith, determination, and candor.
These are traits Kingdom Key hadn’t felt since before Kingdom Hearts was lost to the darkness.
And that is partially why it isn’t gummy ship science for Kingdom Key to materialize back into Sora’s hand after Riku thought to repossess the keyblade. Other reasons consisted of discovering an allergy against the darkness that resides in its ex-master.
Choice was an obscure option seldom used before and after the Keyblade War. Through destiny, or coincidence, or just in association with Sora, Kingdom Key chose its own master-a companion.
