and now, the details of my trip to new york city!
driving into the city was terrible. traffic on the Brooklyn Queens expressway was backed up and added like an hour to the tail end of our drive. but we eventually got to Aram's around 6ish. he had a booked evening that night so we hung out with Ben Fried. we went to white castle. and i gotta say, it was absolutely amazing. i got 4 cheeseburgers, fries and a soda. after that delicious meal, we went and saw Knocked Up at the movie theater 2 blocks from Fried's apartment. it was hilarious. not as good as 40 year old virgin but definitely good. there were certain jokes that i laughed at and continued to do so several scenes later. i don't want to give away anything but the cirque de soleil part was one of those scenes. after the movie, the three of us hit up a sports bar to catch the end of the sox game. they lost but whatever. there was almost a fight at the end which looked pretty cool. afterward we went back to Fried's and watched some Arrested Development (season 1). then we peaced out. Alejandro stayed with Fried and Jesse Winograd. i went and stayed at Aram's.
the next day, I woke up and walked down two blocks to a supermarket to pick up some vanilla yogurt and cinammon granola and had a delicious breakfast with Aram. my car was being used by Fried and Jesse to do benefit-related tasks, so 'Jandro and I chose this day to walk around Brooklyn. once you get there, getting around is pretty easy. the whole grid system is solid. i found a cool comic book store and a neat little record store. my funds were depleting rapidly that weekend so i begrudgingly chose to not buy the M.I.A. album "Arular" on vinyl. although, that night, Aram fulfilled a promise he had to buy records with me at this random store in brooklyn. we went into the basement of this salvation army type store and there were (absolutely no exaggeration) thousands of records there. if there was a fire or an earthquake and we were down there we definitely would have died. it was a lot like the basement of the record store dj shadow was in during the movie "Scratch". we didn't have much time but picked up some good ones. then it was time for the thing i came to new york city for: the margaret woodside benefit. we unloaded all my dj equipment and i ran into Sam Lee, Simon Delekta, Aram, Fried, Jesse, Greg Glassman, Matt and Holly. me and 'Jandro went and grabbed a quick slice of NY Pizza (delish) and then came back to hang out at the benefit. Greg's band played for a bit and a mix cd that i made was auctioned off for 30 bucks! eventually i ran into a lot of rowies i hadn't seen in a while and some i have seen recently. these included: Dan Hartman, Phoebe Westwood, Melody Litwin, Nina Morrison, Anthony (i think) Sokol, Marika Pappas and many more i can't even remember. there were some raffle drawings and Alejandro won a $100 gift certificate to an expensive mexican restaurant in manhattan! after Greg's band, i played a DJ set which included a lot of camp favorites. People seemed to REALLY like it and so did i. the soundsystem wasn't that great but i got a really positive response. some even from people i didn't even know that went to rowe years ago! the whole cleanup process went on until 2am. Aram, Marika, 'Jandro and I played confess on the way home. it was fun fun fun times but we were EXHAUSTED by the end of it.
the next day, 'Jandro and I got up and walked to prospect park where Greg was having a barbeque to celebrate his birthday. when i went, Simon, Aram, Fried, Jesse and of course Greg were there... but so were Gabe Bessette and Tashi! the former of those people i talked to about comics and MF Doom and the latter i talked to about how "changed" t-camp was. i gotta say i'm intrigued... but not so much that i'd want to work there. still though, hearing some of the stuff he said was awesome. after scarfing down some delicious burgers at the barbeque, 'Jandro and I went back to Fried and Jesse's and watched more Arrested Development for like 4 hours. after calling several people to see if they wanted to join us at the mexican restaurant alejandro got a certificate for, we decided to just both go and try to spend the hundred bucks between the two of us. this food... was the best food i've had in months and months. we got nachos, fajitas, steak quesadillas (omg so fucking good), some salad that was definitely tasty and alejandro had 3 $13 margaritas (he got FUCKED. UP.). we also took home some chili con carne fries and two locally brewed grapefruit sodas. it came to like $101 total. unfortunately, the rain was pouring at that moment and we were both in t-shirts and shorts. i got back to Aram's and took a much needed shower and then 'Jandro and I went to a party. it was a combination of Melody's Housewarming and Phoebe's birthday and there were even more rowies there i hadn't seen in a while such as the aforementioned two, Dave Karasick, Sam Lee, Jonah Spear, Eli Litwin, Eli Schmitt and plus several people that Melody is living with for the summer. we ended up playing two rounds of Salad Bowl and talking endlessly about how much this summer is going to rock at JHC. we also lip synched to a lot of songs on Melody's ipod. we stayed over which resulted in eight people sharing two beds in one room. it was uncomfortable but kind of awesome to be delerious with all those people together.
the next day (today) we all got up in a haze and got some bagels delivered to us (i know.. amazing, right?). i had a cinnamon raisin bagel with banana walnut cream cheese and once again, i was amazed with nyc food. 'Jandro and I had to leave pretty soon after that. but we stopped by white castle again and got 20 cheeseburgers (10 each) for the road and the next week. so awesome. the drive back was just as bad as the drive there. we left nyc at like 2:45 and got home around like 7:30 when it was only supposed to be a four hour trip. we got back and i played some nintendo wii (something i've been waiting to do for a while) and now we're currently finishing off season 1 of arrested development.
so overall, i had a fantastic weekend. the worst part was trying to get there and leaving but once i dealt with that it was a blast. i think that next year if i can manage it, i'm going to play the benefit again. pretty soon i'll be going back to nyc to see rage against the machine and wu-tang... i wonder if i'll see anyone i know again...
well... that's all for now, tomorrow tom and rachel are visiting and that will probably continue to be awesome.
awesome awesome awesome.
great weekend.
peace.
