"No pie today Handsome?"
"No thanks. Don't want to spoil my dinner"
"Oh. But what's to say it's not the last thing you ever eat? Say an asteroid collides with the coffee shop just as your sipping on your boring old hot chocolate? And you've just wasted the chance to have a little backwards indulgence by not having your dessert first!"
"...Oookay. So what are the chances of say, and asteroid actually hitting us, right here, right now?"
"Oh I dunno. You look brainy, do the math"
Ville laughed and made his way to his usual table before calling across to her, "Fine! Give me a flake! And not one of the tiddly ones! Don't scrimp me on my 'last indulgence' Sweetheart!"
Smiling, Eimear lifted the flake and placed it on the saucer with a spoon. She knew Ville liked to drop half of the flake into his hot chocolate, and stir it until it melted, and eat the other half while he was waiting. He had some odd little quirks, but she supposed that's what made him so charming. She liked weird. As far as she was concerned, the blissful ignorance of social convention was perfection.
As soon as Ville had his beverage in front of him, Eimear ran out to the back room of the cafe and quickly changed out of her uniform, throwing it in a bag for the next day and leaving it on the counter. From her handbag she located her make-up and a hairbrush and made a rush job of that too. For having taken five minutes to get ready, she thought she didn't look to shabby.
Outside, she sat down opposite Ville and asked him, "Soooo. Where ya taking me?"
Ville's jaw was still halfway to the floor; he'd only ever seen her in her uniform, with her hair tied back. This, this was a whole different woman. Not that it was a bad thing, he hastened to add to his mental commentary.
"Uh...you like Thai?"
"Yep"
Ville's face cracked into a wicked smile as he got to his feet. "Well come on then!"
********
"You're not going to actually ask to have dessert first when he comes over here to take the orders, are you?"
"I don't see why I wouldn't"
"Okay..." Ville replied, deciding a swift change of subject was in order before things became awkward. "Well, tell me about yourself then. Other than you're a talented artist and work in a coffee shop?"
"Well that's about the height of it really. I was born in Dublin, lived there until I was eighteen when my parents gave me £1000, and I decided to move here."
"At eighteen?! And your parents didn't mind? My Momma would have killed me!"
"They were cool with it. They come over every so often to visit. It's nice. What about you then?"
"Well you know I'm a singer...before that I worked in my Daddy's porn shop...actually...enough about me"
"Your dad owns a porn shop?! Awesome!"
"Really? Yeah I mean...uhm..."
******
"You're a girl, yeah?" Ville slurred.
"No I'm a man. I have a giant ten inch penis hidden under my skimpy dress. What do you think?!"
"HAHAHAH! Okay...well...do you ever like...wanna get naked and paint everywhere but your nails with nail polish?"
"Erm...what?"
"...nevermind," he replied, looking rather meek for the first time that night.
Eimear giggled as they turned down to street her apartment was on.
"Yes Sweetheart?"
"Oh nothing. Thanks for tonight Ville. Really. I mean...it was great. I'll see you tomorrow?"
"Yeah, just one thing though"
And at that he swooped forward for a kiss, but instead knocked Eimear's hat from her head. He carried on, and nearly fell over her as she dove to capture the hat before the wind could pick it up and it'd be lost forever. As soon as she grasped it and planted it back on her head at an angle which wouldn't cause Ville to knock it off her head, he pulled her towards him and planted a romantic kiss on her lips.
"Same time tomorrow then?" He said as he let her go, staggering down the street, his hiccup-y laugh filling the night air.
