4th US state to grant equal marriage rights

Apr 08, 2009 00:11

Great news from the USA: Vermont joins Iowa, Massachusetts, and Connecticut in upholding the freedom to marry.

Now, if only California would get back on track....

Electing Obama certainly seem to have improved things; or else someone finally saw reason! :)

Well, New England seems to be very ahead of the rest of the country on the gay marriage issue. Gay activists (or whatever they are called) are definately focusing on those states, and have a goal of all New England states being in the gay'marriage or gay-domestic partnership pile soon. One of the states has a Republican governor this time around, so the plan is to wait until 2011 - when he's out of office - to bring up the vote. We have a tendency to split things here (a Repub executive, a Dem legislature) and that slows down change. It used to work better before our leaders (typically always Repubs, but increasingly Dems too) sold their loyalties to the highest bidder (or religion, as the case often is, pathetically). Having Obama around is kind of a miracle.

New England, from what I've read, was way ahead of the curve in legalizing interracial marriage, as well.

I will be holding out for New England then. Though I do think California should get back on track. :)

Absolutely agreed. We'll see what happens when the justices announce their decision about Prop 8 in a couple of months.
