Mouse Guard's great, from what I've read. I've got one of Luke Crane's more complicated previous works called Burning Wheel. It's a heavy dose of game - heavy enough that I can't really convince local players to set down World of Darkness to play it - but impressive.
Right now I'm only reading the comics, actually. But I have read many great things about the RPG, and I'm pretty much sold on it already. A shame it's so expensive.
What do you mean by Burning Wheel being a "heavy dose of game"? Is it just the rules, or also the setting?
Well, that's a hard question. I'll explain rather then trying to give a pat answer.
Basically, the rules aren't difficult, but they're different then almost any other game so it's like learning all over again. And then there are a lot of them, and they influence pretty much everything.
The most pervasive rules are something called Life Paths, which handle character generation. Basically, you start at birth where you indicate how you grew up and what opportunities were available to you, and you go from there. That influences the setting itself very strongly.
Luke Crane is reported to be a fun but particularly brutal DM. Burning Wheel forces you to purchase shows specifically, lest you go barefoot.
It sounds like an interesting experience, but yeah, very demanding. It's great to see that there are games which blend the story and system so deeply. I think the roleplaying community needs more of that.
