Well... dojinshis are still in the grey area, so to speak. Dojinshi fuel the popularity of the series to a certain extent. Banning dojinshis or deaming it as a copyright issue would do harm to the title as well. Fanarts, on the other hand, depends on the fanartist. Though I noticed from JP fanart websites they usually have that 'do not use without permission' warnings.

Personally, I'd say try not to use either source for your works [icons/layout etc], but I usually make a blinky when it comes to dojinshi pictures. Try to credit the dojinshi circle at the very least. ^^;

Hopefully these doesn't sound too ignorant. *grimace*

Well, if you notice in a lot of dojinshi, there will be a note at the end about how they don't want it reproduced, entered to net auctions, etc. The excuse used by people who use them anyway is the same as the excuses for fanart, really ... that they don't read Japanese. (I personally think the "no net auction" notice is stupid, but hey, I have too many opinions anyway.)

No no, not at all. Appreciate the opinion.

If I had to guess, I'd say the distinction is that DJ artists are making money off the pics and fanartists usually don't.. although I think that using art from either without express permission might be considered equally taboo once the issues involved become common knowledge.

A few years ago, people were direct-linking everything from pics to files without remorse. Then, I suppose more people got their own sites, realized that there are things like bandwidth, and now you can't do that without people jumping all over you and thinking you're inconsiderate scum. Ditto with fanart... people used to repost ones they found and let the signature give the credit, but recently, there's been a backlash even against people who credit and link to appropriate sites, if they don't try to get permission first.

I've heared the "dojinshi writers are making money" argument before (and a lot), but it never made sense to me. Dojinshi writers making money is an exception to the rule (the vast majority make dojin with the very minimum budget, and if there is a profit on one book then they use it for the next book), and if I have to be honest, making money of fanfic/fanart/parody dojin is in my opinion the worst thing you can do in fandom and if I ever get my hands on a dojin which people made money off, I'd use it for layouts and icons and what-not just to spite the writers.

But anyhow, you're probably right about the awareness issue, and that less people will be taking dojin pics in some years.

P.S. Want to extend the period for a few days, like to next Tuesday?

Ah, I see. So DJ is more of a hobby for the writers, rather than something they do for a living? I never knew how that worked, as I'm generally ignorant to art-related things as a whole. Hm... how do you feel about fanartists taking commissions then?

P.S. If you want? I take it you're not around much due to vacation, so haven't had much of a chance to get into this thing. By next Tuesday, you mean the 6th? Or the 13th?

By the way, I went through your memories yesterday. You... have a gift for arguing with people and getting them to back down and concede you're right. XDD I hope I'm not dumbing down your LJ *too* much.

Yeah, I'd say so? I only know of a couple of circles who are known to live off their dojin business. There probably are some more, but then, there are thousands of dojin circles in existence ...

I think taking money for fanart and dojin to cover your expenses (materials, printing, etc.) is quite okay. But I really think selling it for more is bad. Not that I'm the official moral judge here, or anything.

Ahem, anyhow, I was thinking of the 6th? I have read the f-list but not been able to comment and read the fics and do all the fun stuff. -_- If it's okay with you?

My passion in life! :D I'm especially fond of this piece from marysues. (Wow, it must speak volumes about me that I keep track of this stuff.)
