Future AU Thread -- Naia and Colin

Feb 10, 2007 07:39

When she was a fourth year at Hogwarts, jumping at her own shadow, she never expected to become the deputy head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. The mere idea of working at the Ministry was abhorrent and horrible to her then, and yet here she was ( Read more... )

Colin and Kenzie both had been busy enough getting their son ready to go back to Hogwarts, making sure he had all the books and supplies he needed before they shipped him off on the train to school, all the while mentally bemoaning the fact that Thomas had been sorted as a Hufflepuff. Why couldn't he have any Slytherin kids? Sigh. This wasn't fair.

They'd just sent him off when he got the owl, asking him to meet her at some ungodly hour of the night -- seriously, what could they talk about that couldn't wait until the next morning? If it was about that bloody attack, then, well, Colin didn't know what to say, as he fully supported the rebels' actions. Those bastards deserved it, with everything that had happened over the duration of the war.

Nonetheless, he showed up as asked, knocking on Naia's office door late that night.

Naia called Colin in and as he closed the door behind her she stood. It was in situations like this she wished she were a bit taller, a bit more imposing. But she wasn't. And she was at a disadvantage anyway, because Colin was her cousin and therefore had ordered her around for most of her life.

But now she had to issue an order. Not yet. But she had to do it before the night was over. "I'm sorry about the hour," she started. "But I wanted to make sure I wasn't interrupting your dinner plans. Can I offer you a drink?" Naia gestured to a small bar set up in one corner of her not-too-large office. There were after dinner drinks there, the kind that were good with ice and conversation. Naia suspected he wouldn't take her up on the offer, but she needed to offer either way.

"How's Thomas settling into Hogwarts?" She inquired, glad to see him, to catch up on family gossip and news. Of all of the Mayfield cousins, she would have figured that she would have settled down with a family, but it was Colin. (There was no helping Max.)

Colin stepped inside the office, situating himself in a seat without bothering to ask, and nodded to her. They were cousins; there were no need for formalities, despite him being a pureblood and her having an official Ministry position. He propped his feet on top of her desk and reclined a bit, nodding in her direction. "Go for it," he told her, briefly glancing at all the clutter on her desk.

"He's fine." Short but sweet -- he wasn't one for small talk, and besides, they weren't here for small talk, though secretly he hoped that there could be a re-sorting for second years, and that Thomas would get sorted out of Hufflepuff, but oh well. :So, what do you want?"

Naia went over to her mini bar, conjured up some ice cubes, and poured a couple of fingers of the whiskey for them both to linger over. She would have chatted with him as she made these preparations, but he was clearly not in the mood for long, philosophical or nostalgic discussions about their time at Hogwarts.

She moved back behind her desk, handed him his drink, and sat down. "I see you want to get to the point," she said. Leaning back in her chair, she looked him over. He was a good member of the Order, but in their informal ranking system of prestige and knowledge, she outranked him.

"You're aware of the attack by the Rebel Faction in the last week." This was a statement. She wanted to see his reaction.
