Challenge.081 :: Theme

I'm all rushed because of my morning class tomorrow but oh well, I have to give something nasty :3

Challenge.081 :: Theme - Pattern Play

I rarely use patterns in icons but sometimes (ya really), we'd have to deal with them. Patterns are interesting but can be too much for the eye, but still as versatile as other types of textures. For this theme, you'd have to include patterns in your icons. Patterns in icons are done in the same concept as our previous themes. They are usually used to fill empty spaces in the background, to give it more creativity or to make your subject stand out.

This is something I recently discovered. You can use patterns to decorate the skin. It usually takes a picture that has some skin in it and then you can add a pattern in Multiply to make it look dramatic. IDK, but it looks cool because the designs in the pattern hit Hitsugi's eye just right. It almost seemed as if he was tattooed. :3 (Inspired by insanance; 'cause staring at her work drives me crazy *__*)

It's one of my favorite icons. Here, I used a scrapbook texture (yes, scrapbook texture cuts are allowed because they look like enlarged patterns, lol) combined with a mask to frame the image. Easy one, right?

Using masks are the easiest way to get an empty space but it's a good technique. Here, it's a magazine layout mask with another pattern. Reminiscent of our previous theme, ne?

And of course, you'll never go wrong with our Pen tool! I used the pattern in Normal mode but masked out some parts of it using Layers Masks (aka. erasing - but it's better using Layer Masks in PS because it preserves your layer just in case you'd want to re-do your cut).

I assume it would be relatively easy since you'd surpassed Less Than 50% which works like this. Aren't you excited? *wink*

And here are two examples from one of my favorite iconmakers, insanance:

Ain't she very clever? *___*

So, if you're looking for patterns, check out 77words & ownthesunshine. Your materials this time are patterns and scrapbook texture cuts. Be creative and have fun~! ♥ Am I turning this into my iconrant place? *shot*

As usual, you can submit up to five (5) icons.
