I think I want to make it friends-only, but I don't know how to do the whole journal...just individual posts.

I'm sorry I'm a tard and didn't realize that you were asking HOW-TO make it that way. ;)

You've got it right already, just be sure with each post to select the friends option.
Simple as pie.
Not really. I'd rather their be just some total option you could use but hey, that's life I guess.

If you download one of the Livejournal clients (Semagic), you can set "friends" as the default security level. then, all your posts will automatically post friends-only, unless you tell the program that you want a specific post to be something else.

i'll add you to my list once i have my computer back. so i can use better colors, because the default ones LJ provides are ugly on my page. :P
