I'm not especially sympathetic to these people but it seems to me their fear is less of learning than it is of failing. Space-race style desperation and free-to-be-you-and-me attitudes are highly combustible when combined. I have more sympathy for teachers of secondary school and below. Although it does seem like they could do a little more to get off their duffs, overthrow NCLB and fight privatization etc, they are nevertheless pretty much victims of The Man. But as for college professors who don't lay down the law I have little patience. I recognize many of them are up against a culture of coddling. But one would expect them to react strongly, if only out of frustration
