There are so many things you want to say to a person, but you never quite get around to it. Time is your enemy and you fear you have waited too long.
As Zaeed stepped off the Normandy, he knew it was probably the last time he’d see her, but couldn’t bring himself to tell her the one thing he wanted to say most. After almost a half century of life and battles that he shouldn’t have been able to walk away from; his mouth couldn’t form words on his lead tongue.
Helena Chakwas stood at the top of the ramp looking down at him with an unreadable expression.
He had shaken Shepard’s hand earlier wishing her luck and promising his aid when she needed it again, but now he was at a loss.
Then finally, their eyes locked. And just like that what lay unspoken between them was finally expressed to the other.
Zaeed smirked up at her. “See ya later doc.”
And then he was gone down the ramp onto the turf of a world they wouldn’t stop on again. The Normandy pulled up and slowly the crew assembled for the farewell began to disperse. Two people remained in the hanger long after the ship had taken to orbit.
Shepard put a hand on the Doctor’s shoulder, “Don’t worry, we’ll see him again.” She smiled reassuringly, “And there's always shore leave.”
