[Pin] To Los Angeles

There was an intake of breath as the members waited for the location.

“And this is the best part: you may choose where, so as it’s within reason.”

A mild chaos broke out. “Hawaii!” Shige suggested immediately.

“Stupid, we could go anywhere and you choose Hawaii?” Ryo snorted. “Let’s go to New York. I want to see foreign women. And it’s New York.”

“I want to go to Sweden!” Masuda interjected excitedly, as Tegoshi nodded fervently. “It’s really pretty there, and Tego and I could should you guys around, it would be so much fun!”

“New York,” Ryo repeated, glaring.

“Why not France? Or Italy?” Koyama raised his voice. “Somewhere romantic. With really interesting people.”

“New York has interesting people,” Ryo said loudly. “New York. New York. I’m not changing my mind on this one.”

NEWS’s new manager, who was slowly getting used to this kind of thing and had been sitting and listening quietly, noticed Yamashita shifting uncomfortably, looking at his hands and occasionally daring to glance at the group, like he wanted to speak but didn’t. “Yamashita-kun? Where do you want to go?”

Yamashita licked his lips. “How- how about Los Angeles?” he asked, with a feeling of nervousness but also a fleeting hope; and the chattering stopped almost immediately. Yamashita didn’t have to look up to know that everyone was staring at him, but he flicked his eyes up anyway at Tegoshi, who was sitting across from him at the table.

It felt like the moment of silence stretched on forever, but it couldn’t have been more than thirty seconds.

“Let’s go to Los Angeles,” Ryo said, breaking the silence. Only the manager looked at him in surprise.

“Yes, it’s a great idea,” Koyama agreed, smiling that motherly smile of his.

“I want to go to California!” Shige added excitedly.

Masuda nodded. “I’m in too.”

“It’ll be really fun,” Tegoshi said, relieved to see the life return to the their leader’s dark eyes.
And for the first time in a long time, Yamashita broke into a real smile. “Thanks,” he said simply, and he didn’t need to say just how much he meant it.
