I was recently called out on my defense mechanisms by someone who hasn't known me for too terribly long. It's really not that abnormal for people to call me out on putting up walls and arranging my life in a way that prevents people from getting too close, but this conversation was particularly distressing. I was accused of having allowed my ( Read more... )

This is the problem in making friends with psych grads... ;-)

Don't let it get you down. Just see where this new self-awareness leads you, and trust in your friends to help you how they can. I don't think you ever knew Naum Panovski, but one of his favorite sayings applies: Deese tings take time! You have to bake like de bread! You have to make the dough, and kneeeed it, and put it in de oven! You cannot microwave it! :-)

Beth, I've known you for five years, and I wouldn't lie if I didn't say I've at times tried to assault your walls and figure out who you really are. About three years in, I gave up, because now I get that the defensiveness of your personality is actually part of what makes you an interesting person. Like a riddle, you have mysteries to you that can never be explained, and, like the best riddles, never will be.

If you think about it, we associate walls with something that keeps people out. But walls can also be something more asthetic than functional. Look at the Great Wall of China. People are amazed by it, and originally it was meant to keep others out. Now, it draws them in.

I'm not saying it's totally healthy to keep your distance, because I know keeping your distance can be very lonely. But appreciate this uniqueness in you for what it is, no matter who tells you how wrong it is. In the end, even the walls are part of the house.

Anywho, my $.02.
