Gratuitous holiday post

The problem with digital cameras is that you take too may pictures. Then you delete a third, filter down 90%, and you *still* have too many. So, sorry. This is very self-indulgent and, oh yes, un-dialup friendly.

First day we went to St. Peter's Square. For four hours. We queued round the square twice; it was a bit mad.

But sometimes the view is worth it.

I'm very ambivalent about this one because of the light streaming in through the windows; I had to do a lot of cleaning up, but I still think it maybe looks messy. I don't really have any good pictures of the Basilica as I didn't know how to handle all that glaring light in the dark interior.

For some reason I really loved this statue; I found it so dramatic.

We went to the market in the rain, but then the sun came shining through the clouds and it was lovely. And I love artichokes.

But the Forum was more awesome. My favourite part of the holiday. It made me miss learning Latin at school.

And from the forum you can see the Colosseum, which was much wider in the diameter (of an oval?) but much less *high* than I had imagined.

Surprisingly it wasn't madly exciting to visit, as it's little more than a shell - it's hard to get a feel of what it would have been like 2000 yrs ago.

Rome is a city of high fashion...

I love the fountains - they're everywhere. As well of terrifying mens' boxers with optimistically-sized male-bits on the front; Roman women must be quite disappointed relieved by the reality.

The Villa D'Este is a villa in Trivoli with the most beautiful gardens that sprawl down the hillside, with fountains on every level.

I like this photo because you can see the water swirling in a fairly exciting fashion

And this one, though over-exposed, makes me think of sparklers

I desperately want to go to Spain next year. Fingers crossed.
