Gibbs stood staring at the ocean; watching the waves; drinking in the scent of the water; enjoying the tranquility.
He had done it. Finally, he had walked away from NCIS. From his friends; his long-term, lover; his past; his pain. He was free. Completely free. Free to do whatsoever he wanted; whensoever he wanted. No one would wake him up in the middle of the night, telling him about a dead body; no one would shoot at him; no one would ask him questions; make demands; expect things from him.
He was free. Completely, totally, utterly free. He wasn't only free; he was happy, at peace, content, relieved. Finally, he was free of life's burdens, expectations, demands, wants, needs, wishes. He now had what he never dared to dream he would have: he had freedom.
So why did the lyrics of a song he didn't realize he had ever heard, let alone know, keep going through his mind?
Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose. Nothin' ain't worth nothing', but it's free.
