Amusingly, it turns out that not only do the government want to know who we're associating with, they also want to know who we're sleeping with.

I like the census. It provides interesting data, useful information for people doing family history stuff, and gives strategic planners something to base their numbers against instead of plucking them out ( Read more... )

I don't think so. And even if it did, all it would take is someone taking a backup to the wrong server, and that person would get a slapped wrist (or sacked, I suppose). No real sanctions in place.

Oh, here we are: 'Ms Eagle said UK-based firms would carry out the census contract on behalf of Lockheed Martin and she was "pretty confident" there would be robust safeguards on the security of data.'

So that's all right, then.

I'll do it.

FWIW, I very much doubt the data will leave EU soil. EU data protection law is a beast too powerful even for the Americans to dick around with it.

PS: the Keyser Soze thing is only funny if everyone choose him. If we all put different people, the point is somewhat diluted.

I'd opt for Lieutenant Kije as he is the ultimate creation of faulty bureaucracy - or Archebald Buttle.

Interesting comments section - some people invoking goodwin law there quite neatly.

Oh, I gave up reading comments on newspaper websites years ago. Presumably someone has mentioned Mengle, then?

Or - not that this has ever happened to me (more than once) - what if you're only on first name terms that night and he hasn't called? I'm fairly sure the name I knew one overnight guest by would not be suitable for a census.

Ahaha! Yes, that would be excellent. A whole bunch of census returns with "(S)he said his/her name was Arthur/Amelia, something. At time of writing hasn't called, which is unfortunate as I really need to tell them something."
