In Support Of A Friend-Edited

After visiting the links provided by chaosmanor, I've deleted my earlier post. I've simply done an edit so that I can, hopefully, keep chaosmanor's comment with the links included.

Now that I know more about what's going on, I feel the need to say a few more things. I understand why the mods at Slashy Oscars did what they did. Had they provided a link to the discussion, I would not have felt as offended as I did on behalf of someone whose work I still enjoy.

There are several stories I've read that are based very closely and strongly on books and movies. The authors have simply dropped their OTP into the storyline without changing much else, and I'm going to really stick my neck out here and say that I have no problem with that, as long as it remains fan fic. There are at least two Vig/Orli stories that come to mind, one based on "Pretty Woman" and another based on "Titanic" that are so close to the movies as to be indistinguishable from the originals except for the fact that Viggo and Orlando are the main characters instead of Richard Gere/Julia Roberts and Leonardo di Caprio/Kate Winslet. Yes, that could be laziness on the part of the authors, but I still enjoyed the fics because I liked seeing Orlando & Viggo in them. But when a story like that becomes published as original fiction, then a serious line has been crossed. And that appears to be what has happened in this instance. I have never read "Jane Eyre" (and I admit that, even though I have it saved on my computer, I've never read "A Hidden Passion", either), so I can understand how it could have gone unnoticed by fan fic readers for as long as it did.

Plagarism is such a touchy, sensitive, and divisive issue, and hard feelings are so common whenever it comes up. I had enough of that this summer to last a lifetime. Most likely, I wouldn't even have gotten involved in the discussion at all had I not read the post on the Slashy Oscars this afternoon and felt the need to stick up for someone in a situation where it didn't appear that they would be allowed to defend themselves.
