Had anyone known enough to question him (as well they someday might), Thorn would have given a number of reasons for hiding himself so long. He did not wish the story of his past revealed, which was all too linked to the continued ‘curse’, for fear that his friends would think less of him. He was afraid they would encourage him to live up to his birthright, to return home and accomplish the task that would mend his geas. These were true reasons, and could not have passed his lips otherwise, but they were not his only fears.
Somewhere in memory lay a boy, tied down in the dirt and stripped bare with the sun beating down upon him. When they had let him go at last, he had barely been able to move for the blisters. Gathering the shreds of his clothes he had fled into the woods, and nearly died of exposure there. The fear might never quite die. Thorn wore his clothes like armor.
