OOC Prompt: Collective Nouns: Cry of Hounds

Nov 26, 2007 15:53

In truth the hunting dogs had made little noise, especially when after prey. They were sight hounds and wisely saved their breath for running. It had been a lesson, and a punishment, when his father set the dogs on him. As a boy he had fled in terror and spent the entire night in an oak, clinging to the highest branches that would hold him long after the pack had been drawn away by roughly laughing huntsmen. He had stayed there until dawn, at last descending stiff and starved to face an additional beating for having missed chores. The dogs had never liked him, snapping whenever he passed them while serving in the hall. For weeks after that night he had done everything in his power to avoid going near them. In his dreams they did howl, and were sometimes white with red eyes, ears, and feet. Those dogs did not stop, and the trees in his dreams could not be climbed.
