Dream 2

Kohaku is standing in...Yubaba's office? What is he doing back here?

The door behind him opens. He turns, and sees the witch herself come in, followed by a sniveling frog-man spirit. He panics for a moment, but realizes as they pass him that they can't see him.

"Have you discovered a way in yet?" Yubaba asks the spirit, settling herself at her desk ( Read more... )

Huh.

What's a 'Nigihayami Kohaku Nushi'?

Well, maybe you were pretty damn qualified in your world, then, but in this one, you can bet that there's someone else more. That's just the way things work.

I know I'm right. [Oooooh, arrogance.] You just need to start focusing on the facts rather than your emotions. If you need another incentive, just think: Would anyone willingly want to be here of all places right now?

[Oh, but the mentioning of magic has piqued our interest!]

You're familiar with magical formulas?

[He hates to admit it, but she's right. After all, he's already met Alexstrasza; if anyone managed to enslave HER, she'd make a pretty good assistant.] ...True.

[Snorts slightly at her arrogance, but has to admit, she's got a point.] That's true. After all, this place is basically a dead world; what would someone like her want with this place?

More than familiar. Yubaba taught me a LOT of magic. [Now he's a little interested, too.] You can use magic as well, I take it?

So your 'ex-mistress' also taught you magic? That can't be a bad trade-off. What elements do you manipulate? What's your method of execution? I highly doubt you also use blastia and formulas - we're from different worlds, and technology just doesn't transcend dimensions like that. I don't think, anyway.

[Dead world? We don't want to agree.]

... Oi, I'm not dead. And you better not be too.

[He's in total disagreement with the whole 'trade-off' thing, but of course he's not going to say that; he doesn't want to get too much into his past with a girl he barely knows.]

I say an incantation, then use the magic. It's pretty simple, really. I mainly utilize wind and water, but I can do a few other assorted magics.

I meant that it's an abandoned world that we started inhabiting, not that we were dead. Besides, I'm pretty sure I can't die.

[In Rita's mind, magic > inane things like freedom.]

What's the incantation's role in the execution of magic? Does it ground the spell, or is it like a mental application? Is your magic linked to the manipulation of any base substances? Like aer? But wind and water, huh. Fluid elements. They're pretty easy to work with.

... Geez, aren't you the arrogant one? Everyone can die. If you're still alive, it means that someone just hasn't tried hard enough.

I need to say the incantation to unlock my powers. I already had a good grasp on water and wind, so Yubaba decided it would be easier to learn those spells. It allows me to create and manipulate those elements in many different ways.

[Wry smile.] Well, I don't really know if spirits can die, so you might be right. But I doubt it; I've been living for thousands of years now, and I haven't died from any natural causes. So unless someone TRIES to kill me, I won't know.

A natural, huh. Can't say I don't know the feeling. But that just means you're not interested in magic as a form of academics. [She's... more than a little disappointed, but she's not going to say that.] On what principles are your magics based-

WAIT WHAT?

No wonder you can't die. Like hell someone can die twice. That just defies the definition of being 'dead'.

... No. No. I seriously can't believe that. You're a spirit? A ghost? Deceased? I can't be speaking to a dead thing. [She's seriously considering hanging up right now. Blame her fear of the paranormal.] You can't be. It's not even scientifically proven that ghosts exist. Stop joking around.

[He's sorely tempted to go along with her misconception of him being a ghost and freak her out more...buuuuut he's just not that spiteful. Can't help but smile at her mistake, looking very amused.]

I'm NOT A GHOST. I'm a spirit. There's actually a huge difference.

[Oh, look, he's amused at her. Have a glare.]

Look, you're dead. Like there's a difference. And besides, maybe that's why you look so androgynous. Do ghosts even have genders? Just... You better not haunt me, you got that? Or else you'll be eating more than just fireballs. Go find a... an abandoned house to haunt, or something.

nameless_river July 28 2009, 21:05:17 UTC
[Sighs and tastefully ignores that androgynous comment.] You're under a misconception. Allow me to set you right.

See, in my own world, some religions believe that EVERYTHING, including things like plants and rocks, has a SPIRIT, like a soul and a mind. And they're right. I happen to be a SPIRIT OF A RIVER, the very personification of a body of water, NOT A GHOST. So I do not HAUNT things, I happen to be MALE, and I could neutralize those fireballs of yours using water, if I wanted to.

[Now that's a hard concept to swallow. Still, though, does that mean Blastia really do have feelings? She's starting to like this a little better.]

... What a weird world. There's nothing like that in mine.

[A pause. She's catching on.]

... So basically, you're a walking, talking river, huh. ... That's pretty damn weird. And male too. Do spirits tell gender the same way humans do too?

Though besides, spirit or not, I highly doubt you can just 'neutralize' my fireballs. If anything, I'll just turn around and electrocute you. Water's highly conductant, after all.

... A spirit, huh. [She's still a little confounded.] I don't know if I should believe you or not. Give me three good reasons why I should.

nameless_river July 28 2009, 21:20:51 UTC
[At least she's starting to believe him.]

Basically. There are some spirits that take the form of frogs, like you saw in my dream, but they're the exception.

So you use electricity as well? Well, I'm not MADE of water, I just personify it. Besides, I can use spells that let me move VERY fast; you'd only be able to electrocute me if you could catch me.

[He has to think for a moment, to come up with three good reasons. Finally, he has it.] One: I can't do any sterotypical "ghost" things. Phasing through objects, haunting particular places, etc. None of them fall under things I can do. Two: While there are some ghost-like spirits, they're mainly vengeful spirits that cause harm without stopping. I haven't done anything to hurt anyone while I've been here. Three: I doubt ghosts can use magic.

Ugh. Why frogs. There must be better animals to take after.

[Still, though, she's starting to understand his 'dream' a little better now. Or at least the significance is starting to click. Interesting.]

Huh, so you can do buffs too. Let me ask that question again, then. What's your 'magic' based on? Is there a scientific explanation for it, or do you just write it off as 'spirit stuff'?

I don't think I'd have a problem catching you, though. Wide-area spells are my specialty.

[Heh, he actually came up with three reasons. She's amused. Have a grin.]

No matter. It's not like I can just take your word for it. I don't even know your academic credentials, and I'm not in the habit of citing unknown sources. For all I know, you might just be a fraud.

Still, though, if what you claim is true... It's going to be damn useful. Think of all the potential.

Don't ask me. Ask THEM.

Frankly, I don't really know. Most of my magic is just abilities from when I was presiding over my river, so I guess it is 'spirit stuff.' Yubaba just taught me some other spells for the tasks she needed me for.

We might just see about that. [Grins slightly.]

Well, I'm not a fraud. But I don't think my abilities are going to come in much handy; I've already tried to break down the barrier with my magic. It didn't work.
