At lunch today, a rather large woman sat down at the table next to mine with a friend. Between the two of them they proceeded to eat 6 rather large hamburgers, all the while discussing how hard the times are financially. She went on to talk about how she could no longer afford paper towels, and the fact that she is having to sell off her most ( Read more... )

says the boy who pays $80 a month for his PHONE.
or maybe her priorities don't mesh with yours? She never uses paper towels, and while the jewelry is sentimental, she never wears it, so it's mostly useless.... and she likes hamburgers. and this might be her one splurge of the year. And the SUV she might use because she works on the staff of a construction company and has to go on-site.

Oh gods, my phone is $3 a day! ;p
It’s entirely possible her priorities don't align, probable in fact. However, if she is complaining about having to do these things, I'd assume that these are not changes she wished to make in her life. However, I must agree it was quite clear she enjoyed hamburgers, heh. And of course there are reasons to own an SUV. (GM would be in a lot more trouble if there wasn't...) However many SUV owners never actually *need* them, or would be far better served by owning a much smaller car, then renting when you needed one.

tons of my parents clients are already in the works of filing and they still are 'you can take my giant shiny new truck, out of my cold dead hands!' it's terrible. in 6 months my dad had the same conversation with 4 or 5 people, and those were only the conversations i heard about.

do they teach something like 'financial responsibility for life after school' in high school? like "a bag of rice is your friend." and "you can use toilet paper as klinex, but not the other way around because it will clog the toilet."

but ya. sigh-face also at all the factors that are out of her hands.
