The notion of freedom has plagued philosophers for millennia. Do humans posses genuine control over their actions? Or rather are we just parts of a great deterministic machine, such that my decision to snap my fingers is no more an instance of a free action than a log rolling down a hill? When you're talking about libertarians, are you talking about the political philosophy that we should have really tiny, almost non-existent governments, or is this an alternative use of the word. I could see the political libertarians trying to justify the concept of freedom of thought in order to sustain their (slightly) crazy political ideologies.

libertarianism is the name for the philosophy that claims that Free will is true and determinism is false. I don't know what connection this has to the political philosophy, I'm pretty sure the free will usage predates them by quite a bit.
