Personally, I think that if you are considering taking a semester off, you should do it. Especially if you look for work beforehand, and make sure that you have a job lined up--I think it'd be good. I don't know. I took a year off out of basic necessity, pretty much, and it was probably the best thing I've ever done. Having time when you're NOT worrying about the next stupid paper is more therapeutic than you'd think, because honestly--when's the last time you've actually had more time than you knew what to do with? It helps you see what your real priorities are, since what you do to fill your time when you don't have long term academic commitments is usually what the core of you likes doing. Aside from working, but you don't have to work ALL the time.
Anyway, just some thoughts. It's clear the situation is far more complicated than should-I-or-should-I-not, anyway.
