――How was it when you finished last time's “Side Yamabuki” performance?

Araki:At once, my power escaped…that is to say, since it ended, I just about can’t move; the pain in my hip suddenly became violent, it was surprising. Just when the thread of tension was cut, the fatigue that had been gathering for some time also came forth, I think.Aiba:It was like that for me, too. The day after the closing festivities, I’d already caught a cold.Adachi:It was the same for me, too…but the day after the closing festivities, I was studying for a test. *grin* Aiba:I definitely cried at the closing program. I think I cried because there was a feeling that this was a great achievement.Araki:Adaachin was really wailing, wasn't he? *grin*Aiba:Right! Adaachin cried the most!!Araki:Before the curtain rose, when we were forming a circle with everyone, he was already half crying.Aiba:And I don’t think anyone knows this, but wasn’t it the ending “Run Run Run” dance, when he said to me there, crying, “This is the end, let’s do our best, ne.” *grin*Adachi:Huh? I didn’t say that!Aiba:You said it.Adachi:I don’t remember that!Aiba:The scene where you have your solo and dance, too, you were dancing while crying.
Adachi:Ah…the very last scene, right?Araki:He’s remembered!
Adachi:I remember. *grin* Araki:Definitely during the performances we collected various great things, there was anxiety, too…but many times, people came to see us and there was a feeling that they accepted us, and we were happy; meeting the closing program was lonely, so various memories came out,and for the closing program, we were…invested. *grin*Aiba:Ahh, invested, ne. Araki:I nicely swallowed things I shouldn’t have said, about two times I bit my tongue. Even though I counted the words I shouldn't have said...[1]Aiba:But we weren't able to feel any pain until the end.Araki:That's right! That was really great, wasn't it.

――Were you nervous on opening day?

Aiba:The day before opening day I was really anxious, I was calling my friends on the phone. But the day before there was a “haphazard” feel, and I couldn't do anything. (※) I didn't understand the standing places, I couldn't remember the line of flow, I was already anxious...And my friend cheered me up. On stage, my heart was always pounding. *grin* But somehow I did it! (※ Standing places...the places where the actors stand on the stage. To decide these, settings are made with illumination, etc. Line of flow... similarly, how the actors move on stage.)Adachi:The sorts of things that are in a musical, we practically didn't know when the audience came in what sorts of things, so on opening day, Shirota-san kept saying, “This will be interesting, ne,
it will be terrible, ne!” *grin*Araki:I was not the most nervous on opening day. *grin* Because so far, I always displayed the things I did. But every time we repeated the performance I got nervous...the same things I'd done several times before at the beginning were difficult. The pressure appeared rapidly, it was scary. Closing day in Osaka, I was so nervous, I almost threw up. *grin* And when the Osaka run ended, and we had practice again for a period of several days, I was relaxed again for opening day in Tokyo, but again, every time we repeated the performance... *grin* It was a cycle.

――How was Osaka?

Araki:We didn't go out.Aiba:I didn't go out.Araki:I come from Kansai, and I was in Osaka for about three years, but I went with Zukkii to eat dinner at one of the restaurants I often went to during that time. That's all! *grin*Aiba:I was in the hotel room, usually...Araki:Doing nothing, ne. Watching TV...Aiba:Right right right, eating convenience store desserts. Saying, “Tomorrow is another performance...” *grin*

――Was the reaction from the audience different [in Osaka]?

Araki:The points at which they laughed were different, weren't they?Adachi:Ah, I don't remember very well...Aiba:Were you wrapped up in the performance?Adachi:Even on stage, I was thinking about things from the libretto or “What are the next lines~” instead. I don't think of anything, and my method of not worrying comes out naturally...Araki:Maybe the libretto was floating and biting in your head.[2]Adachi:The number of times we did it added up, and a little at a time it got to be like playing, but at first I didn't know how it would be good to interact with Fuji on the bench. But gradually, Taka-san entered into it, too... *grin*
Araki:Little by little, ad-lib emerged, and it got like we were able to respond as our roles, didn't it? As our characters, we were able to play tsukkomi, etc.[3] *grin* Our composure emerged.[2]

――What are some episodes, etc. that you remember?

Araki:Before the curtain rose, when I was on standby, I realized I wasn't wearing my glasses... maybe it was when I changed into my uniform, but I was already on standby and said, “Why am I not wearing my glasses?” I was really hasty.Adachi:One time, when I came out for the second act, I didn't have the band-aid on my cheek. But at the point when everybody was concerned about standing in a line, I met the eyes of an audience member in the very front row. The audience member pointed to her own cheek and said something. Then, “what could it be?” I thought, and when I touched my cheek, the band-aid wasn't there!Aiba:That's awful, isn't it! *grin*Adachi:Looks like I took it off during during intermission. I was in a hurry!Aiba:In Fuji and Taka-san's doubles scene, we lose the match, and Taka-san becomes “Burning!” and I take Taka-san's racket, but on closing day, I didn't make any move to take the racket, I watched rather silently. So he was still “Burning.” *grin*Araki:Taka-san also started to realize it a little - “Huh?! You're late.” *grin* That scene, Taka-san got a little stretched.Adachi:So everyone said, “Let's get a little revenge.” Araki:Resisting the laughter was difficult. *grin*Adachi:When Kikumaru says “Ah,” I'm able to laugh and stuff because that's the character! But over there, Endou-san was funny. Endou-san, when he was trying not to laugh, always turned toward the back and started to make a pretense with his racket! *grin*Araki:But I thought Yuuyan was great, absolutely. Once his mike flew off, and in order to be heard in the second floor seats, he kept straining his voice. The staff was extremely fast in dealing with it.Aiba:Midway, they replaced his mike.Araki:That Yuuyan noticed the staff in the wings was also incredible, and the speed of that exchange was, as well... And then, we were really deeply moved at the closing performance, weren't we?
(And here, having finished the previous Close Up, Suzuki-kun trespasses)

Zukkii:In the closing performance, when “Good Combination” was over, Adaachin, overcome with emotion, threw his arms around me!Aiba:Is that right? Heh~! What a selfish thing to do, Adachi-kun! *grin*Adachi:I was really happy. Well, that~... spontaneously... *all present laugh*Aiba:Shy about it?Araki:Hiding your embarrassment? *grin* Well, as far as I'm concerned for the memories of that time, definitely “It was fun!” is the strongest one.Aiba:That's right, for me, too. Overall, the messages I receive saying “It was good” gradually increased, so I was really happy.

――Well, finally, it's a concert...

Adachi:It's an extremely big place. How many schools could fit in it, huh?Aiba:Schools?! *grin*Araki:This time, there isn't acting, it's mainly singing and dancing, no part of the libretto was decided on, everyone hasn't rebuilt their characters again, so that's a task, too, isn't it?Aiba:I want to get riled up with the audience! Araki:Because of my age, I don't move at all during practice.Aiba:We'll have none of that sort of thing, will we!Araki:It's the best I can do.Aiba:What is? You mean you can tell us to try harder? *grin*Araki:That's right~, I want to see Adaachin flipping around in the air!Aiba:Doing backflips, I want to see, I want to see!Adachi:The truth is, flipping around in the air, you want to see me fail the landing and put myself through a lot of trouble! Especially him! *points at Aiba-kun* Aiba:No! I would be deeply moved and cry!Adachi:No, you'll definitely crack up! The first time you were definitely the type to crack up!Aiba:The first time I cracked up, you were like, “...Huh? Was it really awful?” *all present laugh*Araki:He always says that~! *grin*Adachi:And after that you get really really nice, saying, “Sorry, sorry, that was hateful~” *grin* Because I can imagine it!Aiba:That's right, maybe I really am that sort of type! *grin* But you do your best, ne, Adaachin. You come to me and say, “Teach me acrobatics!” and stuff...Adachi:I'll do my best!

――This time, it's a performance with all four schools...

Araki:It's awesome, isn't it? Since it was our first time being together with Fudoumine, it was extremely fun.Aiba:Fudoumine is interesting! They're cool! They're talented dancers! They're also talented singers!Araki:Wahh, wahh, wahh, it's fun~! To a great extent, they became a motivation. There are some people who aren't able to appear this time, too, but so many were present and I definitely grew happy, it was extremely fun! I want to keep changing costumes, too~.Aiba:I want to wear a gakuran![4] And then, I want to run up to the audience seats. I want to go round and round them![5]Araki:That's right, to get as close as possible, I want to get close to the seats on the second floor!

――Well then, in conclusion, something for the people looking at the homepage!

Adachi:This time is only one time[6], so I want to do my best at the things I can bring out. All of Seigaku will do their best!Araki:It's a really big place, but I want to do a concert where there's an affinity like the assembly hall is one space, so I want you to look forward to it. Aiba:Somehow or other we want the audience to get charged up with us, so definitely get charged up with us, please! Getting charged up with everyone, let's make the day like a dream!

[1] Not too confident about this line's translation; there's one word that's used in a non-literal context that's bugging me, so it might change once I've had the chance to check it out with some other people. ^_~
[2] ....Oookay, this is the same word that was throwing me off before. :P "Kamu" (噛む), anyone? The only definition I can find is "to bite, to gnaw," etc... Araki's the only one that uses it, but he uses it enough to drive me nuts!! XD;;
[3] "Tsukkomi" - this comes up in a couple more interviews, so here it is: "tsukkomi" and "boke" are two halves of a comedy pair. The "boke" is the one who says stupid things and gets smacked in the head, and the "tsukkomi" is the one who does the smacking (the verb form of what a tsukkomi does is "tsukkomu"). A Western example of this relationship might be Abbott and Costello ("Who's on first?") or Laurel and Hardy, or even Pinky and the Brain. XD
[4] "gakuran" - school uniform for boys
[5] One thing I love about these interviews is that it helps to show just how wonderfully spazzy Aiba is. XD XD XD
[6] One day, I think he means - one day and two performances.
