Two Options

Option 1: Social work position, progressive organization, decent money.  But, high caseload, it's far, and it's working with adults.  I don't know that I actually *like* adults.  Or would like working with them.  I've found teenagers to be pretty engaging, but adults - not so much ( Read more... )

I think if you can wing it financially (and mentally!) you should keep looking. You don't seem jazzed about either one of these jobs. Of course, you can always try one of them out, and leave if you don't like it.

Also for option two, you probably can negotiate a higher wage, and at the least, a better title. I think career.berkeley.edu has some information about salary negotiations and all that in you are really interested in the job.

that's a tough one. i think you can grow into a certain population. i never thought, "hmm...i wish i could work with homeless, MI/CD folks. that would be a blast." but i did it and i like it and i think it'll be good experience for whatever i do next. and i know i'm not going to do it forever. for me, the killer on option one would be the far (long) commute. if detroit taught me anything, it's that i'm not cut out for a long commute. as for option two, i think doing the fundraising thing isn't great since you're trying to move away from that. it's just easier to get jobs doing what you've been doing. but if the organization is worth it and there's other positions open that would be more ideal in the future, it could be a good "investment" of your time.
or you could ride it out and end up with an even better fit. remember, j took 5 months to find a job and then a couple more to find a great job.
good luck!
