I do love the little teaser about Owen maybe being Jack's son.
Poor Jack, that knitting together has gotta hurt. He's really a poorly wee thing in more ways than one.
I like how it's clear they could have used Ianto's help and he is clearly an asset and Jack knows it, but it's very in character that he doesn't really say it out loud, just takes him back into the office.

I love playing with the question of who Owen's dad was. (My money's still on John Hart, because of the cheekbones.)

They are SO MESSED UP right now. It pleases me. *evil*
Poor Jack. I don't know what to say. He's both boss and lover and seems not to be doing a really good job of doing both at the same time, except this is Torchwood and its all impossible! His grief is so terrible and debilitating. I'd forgotten that he'd been willing to sacrifice the world for Ianto. Twice! How could I forget that and how bad he must feel knowing he will certainly lose his love again. I can't even imagine how hard that is and yet YOU captured his grief and pain perfectly. You gave it life and made it real for me. The angle with Steven is interesting, too. No one really knows how to handle the returned and that isn't helping them at all. Steven needs Ianto. I hope his mother realizes this before he's done irreparable harm. So many twists and turns! Great story!
They're halfway to the bakery when reality sets in with a shocking cold. "I can't go in." "Why?" "I'm not an employee. You've said." "You were. And to be honest, if working for Torchwood ended with death, I'd've had to reapply about a thousand times by now." great lines
i agree with the other commenters fantastic pacing, love the characterization.
Loving the pacing, the characterisation, everything in this fic. Gwen's conversation with Ianto was a necessary reality check; I think he equates importance with usefulness, but he's really got nothing to prove.
