There are many Alice and Ianto stories, and they're an interesting pair to study, two difficult people under the rough heading People Jack Loves. Although as you point out, there are quite a lot of people that Jack loves, so that doesn't necessarily give them much in common. I think the stepfather quip is apt, because with a step parent (especially one that arrived after the 'kid' grew up), you really can have almost nothing linking you - not personality, not domicile, not affinity for any single thing except this one person you share, and that, probably somewhat territorially on both sides. So - you managed to give them that, I think. This thing that anchors them together, and neither knows quite what to do with it. THey're running a sort of three-legged race.
I don't even want to re-read that to find out how egregiously I abused the concept of the mixed metaphor. Metaphors, I like them, I think in them, I use them way way too much. Then I rewrite, or else just slink away in shame. Tonight, doing the latter. Night!
