I have only the very vaguest idea who these two women are. One is an ex-Torchwood operative (maybe/possibly one of Jack's progeny, IIRC?), and the other is somehow related to The Doctor. Never seen them in episodes, never even seen pictures.

And this story still reached into my chest and squeezed.

I dunno how you do it, but...

:) You always say the nicest things. I suspect this one is going to be issueriffic for those of us with kids ( ... )

Gorgeous. Painful and heart-breaking and beautiful. I think the best moment, even more than the "due solemnity" of the reading of the name and them leaving before cake was served, is "I thought they would let me hold her."

Thanks. :) I've got a set of stories with surrogacy (not all of them have been written down yet) and they all have different outcomes. Topic fascination, I has it.

That was absolutely heartbreaking.
Beaming the baby out like that ...that one minute it's there, and then suddenly isn't. It's just terrible. I imagine, even if someone is only a surrogate, maybe holding the baby for a minute can give at least some closure (or not). But this solution..this seems so cruel.
Beautiful fic <3

Thank you. On the one hand, they take away the pain and much of the peril of birth, but on the other, they also take away even her illusion of having the child for her own. And now she and Alice don't have the same pains, but what they've got overlaps.
