Summary: Reid visits Grimaldi Shipping

When Reid arrived at the gleaming, expansive lobby of Grimaldi Shipping, he headed across the marble floor towards the massive Visitor’s Desk. The bald behemoth in a security guard uniform manning the desk wore a name tag with the name “Max Crawford.”

Before Reid could explain that he was here to see the Big Cheese, Max offered his meaty hand in greeting.

“Good afternoon, Dr. Oliver,” offered Max. “Welcome to Grimaldi Shipping. If you wait one moment, I’ll print out a visitor’s pass for you.”

Reid was a little spooked, both by the friendly greeting and by the fact that a [gigantic] stranger knew his name. “How did you know who I am?”

Max smiled. His gold tooth shined. “You and the Boss Man usually show up in the society pages of The Argus, The Intruder and The City Times whenever there’s a fundraiser. You’re usually scowling. Just like you are right now. Here’s your visitor’s pass. You’ll have to hold it to the scanner to the elevator to the left which goes directly to the top floor. I’ll notify his assistant to let her know you’re on your way up.”

“Yeah, uh, thanks,” Reid said while pinning on his badge. During the elevator ride, Reid started humming the theme to The Monkees. It suddenly occurred to him that there were probably security cameras in the elevator. “Dammit,” he thought.

As Reid stepped out of the elevator, he was greeted by a young woman in a tailored business suit. “Good morning, Dr. Oliver. Welcome to Grimaldi Shipping. I’m Mr. Snyder’s administrative assistant, Louise Shelby. He’s finishing up a meeting now and should be available in a moment.”

“Thanks,” said Reid as he followed her to a waiting area outside of what must be Luke’s office. He glanced around at the elegant surroundings and the quietly sophisticated art hanging on the walls. The doors to Luke’s office opened and several Wall Street-looking folks came out discussing the unbearable injustice of shipping tariffs. As the last person walked out the door, Reid slipped into Luke’s office. Reid realized that his farm boy boyfriend’s office was way nicer than his own. He tried not to be disgruntled about that fact. He didn’t succeed.

Luke looked up from his desk at Reid’s entrance and grinned. He looked like a gorgeous angel. Reid quickly got over the fact that Luke’s office was nicer than his.

“I didn’t know you were coming by,” said Luke as he walked to Reid and gave him a hard kiss on the mouth. “Whatcha doing here?”

“We’ve got to talk,” said Reid.

Luke narrowed his eyes. “In all of history, that sentence has never led to anything good.”

Reid rolled his eyes. “Hey, do I ever bring forth anything other than joy?”

Luke laughed and led Reid to a leather couch. They sat. “What do we need to talk about?”

“Okay, you’ve been really busy since you got back from the last business trip and we really haven’t spent any time together for ages,” said Reid.

Luke’s sudden look of guilt startled Reid.

“I’m so sorry,” apologizes Luke sheepishly. “I know that I’ve been travelling a lot for Grimaldi Shipping and spending time on my night classes and that I’ve really been neglecting you.”

“There’s nothing for you to be sorry about,” said a confused Reid. “I don’t have a problem with the time you’re spending on work or school. You never give me a hard time about when I’m swamped with work or when I have to cancel evenings together.”

“Yeah, but I knew going into this relationship that you have the kind of career that would sometimes have to take precedence over our relationship. You freaking save lives. I’m so proud of the work that you do, Reid.”

“And who could blame you?” asked Reid. “In a just world, my neurosurgery skills would cause me to be worshipped as a living god. You know that I’m proud of all that you do, right? This company, your school, your foundation. Why would I be upset that it’s time-consuming?”

Luke scratched his ear. “Well, I would understand if you felt that I need to work harder at accommodating to your schedule because of how important your career is. And I really don’t want you to ever feel that I’m neglecting you. Our relationship is so important to me.”

“I don’t expect you to feel that my work is more important than yours, you moron,” said Reid. “I want you to be as fulfilled by your work as I am by mine. I think we’ve been doing pretty good at balancing our work and personal lives and fitting time in for the two of us.”

“You came here to discuss the fact that we’re not spending enough time together,” reminded Luke.

“Yeah, we’ve both been swamped lately so I was going to suggest we go away together this weekend,” said Reid. “There’s always going to be times when one or both of us get busy. Then when we get a chance, we’ll make up for it.”

“You are pretty awesome.” Luke said gleefully. “Going away together will be fun. I’m so glad you thought of it. I’ll take care of all the arrangements. I’ll make reservations someplace nice.”

“Don’t bother,” said Reid. “It’s all set. I talked to Luce and got her to offer us her cabin. I’ll go grocery shopping tonight for sandwich fixings. We’ll throw a cooler in the car and leave right after work tomorrow.”

“I really love you,” sighed Luke.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. I love you too,” huffed Reid. “Hey, do you know that you have the biggest desk I’ve ever seen?”

“When Faith comes to visit me here, we sometimes have a picnic on top of the desk,” said Luke.

“Hmmm. You know, you visit me at the hospital a lot. I could visit you every once in awhile.”

“You can’t stand the idea that I sometimes eat with other people, can you?” smirked Luke. “You just want to visit me here so we can picnic on my desk together.”

Reid eyed Luke. “I was thinking of stuff other than picnicing that we could do on your desk.”
