I just left thinking about Slayers where I did, until I finally revised what I thought I knew -- because it was so blindingly obvious. So obvious I never bothered to discuss it. Blindingly obvious to anyone who happened to be a Summoner, anyway. But Summoners never became Watchers before I did, because we have a Most Unfortunate Tendency to go "bad."

And bad is? -- Summoners usually don't question the idea the abyss does look into us -- we know it. We upset the binary, black and white notions the old Council depended upon to justify itself.

That excused the Council killing my kind on sight until a generation before my own. Turfed out, yes, but no longer dead without question, like an average vampire. Travers and his ilk were terribly self-congratulatory about being so very humane. I'm not sorry they're dead, and wouldn't ever claim to be.

I did my revision prior to Arianna's and Dawn's appearance at Ethan's tea, which was supposed to be later that afternoon. The new timetable could not possibly have been worse for me. I was going to offend someone no matter which way my attention fell, and I'd been such a good boy at work of late I was less inclined to offend Ethan.

Especially when it was my not-so-very-bright idea to tell Ethan I didn't mind his new hobby pet toy, as long as it he didn't interfere with matters between the two of us. If Ethan hasn't frightened the boy off, I suspect he has a coin to pay for any lessons Ethan has to teach... if he has the nerve.

Could I have anticipated the equation I should have done in the Dionysian carnival of Ethan's existence? The more Ethan has, the more Ethan wants -- and the more Ethan wants, the more Ethan takes.

Speaking of vampires... 'Ethan made me promise I wouldn't forget to send his regards,' I told the vampire Slayer. Not a contradiction, a continuum -- again with the morally ambiguous. 'And he's genuinely sorry your un-life has been buggered.'

She looked a little puzzled, to me, when I first said it. 'Ethan Rayne?' I tried. 'He said he knew you, when I mentioned you at home. Or is it the part about Ethan being at home with a Watcher that threw you?'
