You know, Spike's freakish over-sensitivity actually strikes me as exactly right. He would react that way, with that vampire over-thinking-when-they-do-think way.

And bonus points for Mike answering the questions! I await the smoochies.

Jeesh; our boy just doesn't live in a temperate zone, does he?

You have one of the greatest Spike voices. All the complexity that makes him such an intriguing character, sweet, snark, stubborn, loyal. You bring out every facet of his character.

I know that everything that happens will have a bearing on what is to come and I can't wait to see what will grow from this bonfire picnic.

Love it. I can totally see Spike losing it over napkins. Spike's thoughts in ch. 1 about letting Buffy take the lead are really reflected here. He is trying so hard to "read" her and give her what she wants, he is totally overanalyzing and over-reacting to things. Spike's need to follow also completely ties back to his pressuring Buffy into going along with his grand plan that didn't go quite as well as he would have liked.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this develop.

Right you are. Consciously, Spike has rejected planning. It leads to the bad and makes him despise himself when he disappoints those around him, those he loves. That prospect terrifies him. However, he *wants* things and few fall into his lap. So it's the tension between wanting to live purely in the moment and yet to organize a place/events to be acceptable to Buffy, that has Spike pursuing his famous incompatible cross-purposes at the moment.

This family picnic charms me to death.

Since Mike had backed off, opting to be merely a large and disinterested feature of the landscape, it was clear that Dawn intervention was called for.

And Mike's stance within the mix is perfect, of course. No stance at all.

Not looking at anyone, Mike put in quietly, “Not alone.”

That was so self-evidently reasonable that it took discussion to sort out.

Haw. :D

He was putting himself through agonies. It was totally demented.

Yikes, extremist much? But of course we love him for it, poor Spike. Impromptu picnic = triumph! No napkins = FAILURE.

Dawn approved. The only proper approach when Spike was being stubborn or obnoxious was to ignore him. Offer no encouragement at all. Even Buffy knew that.Yay, Buffy. She's becoming quite the accomplished Spike wrangler ( ... )
