All right, the boys have a plan. It's a bad plan, but it's all they've got. Will they succeed?
Episode 66: "Beyond the Wall"
Not much happens this episode...at first.
The first part of the episode is like the cut scenes of the party in Final Fantasy VI before the battle to defend the Frozen Esper. Basically, characters get to interact with each other in short vignettes. Some of it is touching, like Jon Snow offering Mormont the sword Mormont's daddy gave Jon, only for Mormont to refuse. Interestingly, Wild Man seems to have started accepting Scarface-like views, but he and Scarface don't get along. Maybe it's because Scarface is more of a serious sad sack these days, while Wild Man has become more of a troll.
This is intercut by scenes in Winterfell, where Don't Trust Me, Bro is turning the Stark sisters against each other. Incest Queen asks Sansa to come to the capital and.. Also, Arya confronts Sansa about what she found, a note Sansa wrote under duress to HeartRobb in Season 1. Sansa gets scared, blabs to Littlefinger, then goes searching through Arya's things, only to find masks. Arya confesses she's an assassin who can take people's faces (literally) and makes veiled threats to Sansa.
Meanwhile, Tyrion advises Daenerys, but she seems to disregard every piece of advice he gives. He also claims Jon Snow is in love with her. This is actually important, since she denies being in love with him, since he's apparently too short for her. Yeah, right..
But back up north, the quest to find and trap a zombie goes about as well as you'd expect. They come across a zombie bear which wounds Patch's priest friend, but they finally spot one of the White Walkers leading the grunt undead. They fight the undead, who outnumber them until the White Walker that is their leader gets killed, and nearly every other undead collapses.
Kill the master, the rest of the sub troops die, except one which they need to capture. They nab it with only moderate difficulty.
They realize all that means is that if you kill Ol' Blue Eyes, everyone falls like the Chitauri from the Avengers. And given that Ol' Blue Eyes has not one (dragonglass), or two (Valyrian steel), but three (fire) weaknesses, this is...well, doable.
Unfortunately, a little thing called reality derails their plans. The undead skeleton screams and just like the Female Titan on Attack on Titan, it summons all the undead from the lands around it.
The group tells MiniTaur to run and leave his hammer, and the young man has to run all across the countryside, collapsing just as he reaches the gate of the wall. He is in very bad shape, but is able to relay to Crab Man (who stayed at the wall because he said he couldn't fight) that the group is in danger.
So, because plot armor demands they survive, the group makes its way to a lake with a frozen rock in the center. The lake's ice cracks, but with no choice, they run to the rock...and are surrounded on all sides by undead. And Ol' Blue Eyes watches. The undead stop after a decent amount of them fall into the ice, so the heroes are safe for now...until the ice.
Patch's priest dies of his wounds, which means no more 1-ups for Patch. They also have to burn his body, even though having two undead -- especially one that has a face -- would be be better than one.
Then, after what is likely a day or so, Scarface gets frustrated and starts throwing rocks at the undead. He's got a good arm, so he's able to hit one in the face with a rock. Unfortunately, his Beast Titan impersonation bites him in the butt when the rock he throws lands on the ice and doesn't shatter it. So the undead start to advance, and our heroes fight. It is an awesome battle, with Patch wielding a literal flaming sword, and the undead also trying to free their comrade. But it isn't looking good for our heroes as it's looking like "The Battle of the Bastards" without any relief.
Then Daenerys rides in with all three dragons to save the day. Her dragons set the corpses on fire, and the heroes climb on her dragon, along with their walking corpse, ready to take flight.
Still, Ol' Blue Eyes isn't exactly unprepared. See, apparently, he didn't get to the be the leader without any sense. He has his wingman give him an ice spear and throws it at one of Daenerys's dragons. Unlike BSS, it's a CRITICAL HIT! THE DRAGON GOES DOWN INTO THE ICE, FLAMING ALL THE WAY!
This man is NOT playing around. And apparently, the dragon/undead weakness goes both ways.
Jon Snow realizes that this is a trap, and that as the Designated Hero he has to draw the attention of the undead, so he tells Daenerys to go without him. It's very dumb because he could have just climbed on, but no, he wants to be Jack from Titanic for some reason. He's the King of the World, and she and the others fly away. Ol' Blue Eyes has another spear ready and throws it at the big dragon they're riding, but it just misses.
So Jon Snow faces off against the undead, falls into the ice, and nearly drowns. He's under so long that the army actually starts to leave. Unfortunately, he still lives and climbs back to the surface. So they rush him again.
But Jon Snow isn't allowed to die and he has too much Plot Armor. Uncle Stark out of nowhere comes to the rescue, puts Jon on a horse, then goes out in a blaze of glory. It's not that sad of a moment, because it was said that Uncle Stark couldn't go across the wall anyway and he's tired of being a revenant. But of course, Jon Snow doesn't know all that. His uncle just rescued him and the horse carries him, nearly unconscious to the wall.
Meanwhile at the wall, Daenerys is looking out at the wall waiting for Jon Snow to come back because she now believes in the power of love. They're really doing this Locke and Celes dance, except with less likable characters. And Jon Snow arrives on his horse just as she is about to leave, in bad shape. They take him back...somewhere on a ship, and Jon Snow says he'll bend the knee. They two emotionally connect as Daenerys grieves the loss of her dragon.
But...what is dead will never die. See, Ol' Blue Eyes isn't going to let a corpse go to waste. He gets his army to get these GIANT chains to pull the dragon out of the ice. Then he places his hand on the snout of the dragon, which awakens with blue eyes, now part of the rabid skeleton army.
I finally got my dragon zombie....just not the way I wanted. Still, I like how it ended.
Notes.
- Okay, Bran. I understand that you want to be not "Bran Stark" right now, but you need to do something to get your sisters in line.
- Arya's character...is undergoing reversion here, and not in a good way. She started to understand that sometimes you have to learn how to lie to live, but now she's goading Sansa because Sansa did just that. Maybe she and Sansa are both playing Don't Trust Me, Bro.
- What are you guys going to do when Incest Queen just tries to execute everyone?
