So it's "The Last of Us" but I'm waiting for a consistent tone for this series.
- The episode opens up three months later after their ride through Crazy Town. That means it's winter and there's snow on the ground.
- There's this Native man and his Native wife and of course, Joel bursts in and demands information as to how to proceed.
- I had an impression the character were supposed to be going a few states over. I didn't realize they were going all the way to the West Coast. That would have been a long way for a battery. I must have missed some critical dialogue because I don't know where they're supposed to be going.
- Anyway, there's a valley of death to avoid.
- Joel...you don't look so good.
- So this is going to be one of the "empty" episodes. At least we get a shot of the Hoover Dam.
- Spoke too soon. Joel and Ellie are soon surrounded by some raiders on horseback. They have a dog that can detect infected, but it doesn't detect Ellie as one. I'm moderately disappointed.
- They're escorted to Deadwood. That's where Joel's brother is. Despite being low-tech, this is the most sane place we have seen all series long. It's thriving. Ellie is even given a menstrual cup!
- Oh, it's Tara from True Blood! And she's apparently partnered Joel's brother. And pregnant. No, I didn't need the later scene to confirm this. It was obvious when Joe's brother introduced her as "family."
- Joel is also having another heart attack or panic attack and mistakes the curly hair of a colony member for his daughter. He realizes that he's going to have to leave Ellie behind. There's lot of talking where he realizes he can't stay here but he can't endanger Ellie for the next stage of the journey.
- Ellie...just shut up! You sass at every adult you come across but you'd be dead without their help.
- All right, there is a legitimately funny exchange. After Joel's brother decides to look the other way as Joel steals a horse, Joel tells Ellie she has a choice whether to come with him or not. She doesn't let him finish and she says yes and goes with him.
- So the two go to a university, which is empty except for a whole bunch of monkeys.
- Then there are some raiders who enter the scene.
- Joel just flat out kills one of the patrollers and he and Ellie make a retreat...wait...Joel's wounded.
- The two get away on horseback, but not for long as Joel falls off the horse!
- He's dead! Suddenly, I have no more rooting interest. I guess Ellie has to go back to Deadwood.
