Ch. 2

The day after I arrived, I woke up in a bed that I didn't recognize in a room that wasn't mine...but apparently, they've both been assigned to me by whatever power takes care of this place. I really don't know what to think. Everyone I spoke to, while seeming more foreign than some of the most outlandish fantasy novels' characters, seemed genuinely ( Read more... )

Teamwork? Why would we need something like that?

Around here we just get stuff for free.

Hey. You.

What did you just say?

I said we've got a free ride here! This is the easy life! No need to contribute to society!

I'm sorry. I think I just heard you saying that everyone on this island would be fine if they just up and dropped whatever they were contributing to society, and things would just run themselves.

Or, did you actually say that?

What I did was not a service requiring repayment, nor were your reactions unreasonable.

I have spent some time pondering the island's "inescapability." In that vein, I have considered testing the boundaries myself. I can fly what I imagine to be a considerable distance, though I have been reluctant to try and escape. As I said, every previous attempt ended in failure, and risking one's life with no chance of success would be a fool's errand.

*small smile* ...Well, you have my gratitude, again.

That cruise has me curious, though. Why not take that out to sea and look for the mainland?

Of course.

I suspect it would be safer, though I believe the purpose of the cruise ship is more for pleasure than exploring. It may difficult to convince the owners to use it for such an adventure.

...I'd like to see about that sometime. *puts a hand to her chin as she think* I suppose first I'll need to earn enough money to buy the use of the ship.

Trapped is NOT a word I really wanted to hear.

*eyebrow raise* Well...you heard it.

I like civilization, don't get me wrong, but I also prefer it to be... escapable. Unfortunate misunderstandings and all that.

..."Unfortunate misunderstandings"?

I don't believe trapped is a good way to put it, but I may just be trying to look on the bright side a little too much.

So, you see this place as your home? I can't deny that it feels like it's been these peoples' home for ages, talking to the townspeople.

allthingstodust October 20 2008, 06:45:59 UTC
I suppose that's an excellent way of putting it. Of course, I know I'm not from here, but if I can't return home, why not make this my home?

You aren't curious why we can't escape?

I don't really need repayment, but if you insist...I'll let you know if I ever think of something.

If you're interested in exploring the island, I can help. I was able to put together a map of the island. It's basic, but accurate.

A map? Yeah, I'd like to see that. You explored the whole island? I wonder how large it is, how long did that take?

future_defender October 20 2008, 17:54:51 UTC
Let's see... The island is actually pretty big -- it's almost a continent. It probably would have taken the average person months, but I'm far from the average person. I got it done in about a week, thanks to a little trick I used to get around.

Anyway, the map was something I did on commission. The guy who paid me for it was the head of the science department at school, a man by the name of Ginko. I'll make time to ask him if he's willing to lend it out.
